I couldn't agree more with everyone in here. I think Smallcreep's Day is arguably the best solo album, or at least maybe the most faithful to the Genesis sound, of all the non-Steve Hackett solo albums ever released. (Let's face it, "Voyage of the Acolyte" certainly almost IS a Genesis album!). Ant's contributions are tremendous. Simon Phillips puts in an amazing performance on drums, especially during the instrumental parts of the "Smallcreep" Opus (although I remember reading an interview shortly after the album came out, where he said he felt the drums were buried in the mix ... I don't know, I can hear what he's doing, and I LOVE it!). And I think Noel McCalla's vocals were excellent, too!
It would have been interesting if Mike, Tony and Steve pooled their writing around this time, but then, of course, we wouldn't have gotten those individual solo releases -- ALL of which are great records. Would have probably made a great double-album, though ....
