Rare Genesis and Related releases.
Hello again, everyone.
One of my favorite things about collecting music of any band is finding rare stuff. Vinyl 7" or 12" singles, CD Singles, rare UK or European vinyl picture sleeves, special pressings, etc. Usually, I prefer UK releases (I don't know why, but I LOVE British pressings -- maybe because most of the bands I dig are from the UK, so it's like UK pressings are "the ones" to get -- I don't know, I'm STILL not sure why I'm into THOSE pressings...!) Anyway, there are some interesting releases that I don't own, or haven't even seen. One is CB 304, Rutherford's "Time & Time Again"/"At The End of the Day". I have copies of the mispressed single, with "Overnight Job" -- it seems that is the more common pressing -- with "At The End of the Day" listed as the B-side on the label and the sleeve. Anyone actually have a copy, either with "Overnight Job" on the sleeve OR the label, OR pressed correctly with "At The End Of the Day"? I DO have the US Passport single with the remix of "Moonshine"/"Working In Line". The Genesis discography "Turn It On Again" from Omnibus indicates the A-side is a special remix, which it is -- it kind of highlights Ant's keyboard work a little bit more. But the B-side is also an interesting mix, different from the LP/CD version, in that they repeated the main verse, and then it fades out. Very cool, actually. Also have it with a promo PS (Passport PS 7919). And I have 2 copies of the Holland "Working In Line" single (same mix as the B-side of the US A-side above)/"Compression". The B-side is an outtake from the "Smallcreep" sessions, and clocks in at 6:05. It's a great song, too -- I wish they included it as an extra track on the CD. Perhaps one day if they re-release/remaster it. Wouldn't hurt to include the 2 remixes, too. Of Tony Bank's rare stuff, I have the remix UK single (CB 365) of "For A While"/"It's A Curious Feeling". The A-side is an audibly different mix, although the differences are subtle. That was also released as a US Promo single (US Charisma CA-3503), with a paper slip promo sleeve that has the lyrics to the song. (Stereo/Stereo, instead of the usual Stereo/Mono pairing). Don't have UK CB 344 though: "For A While"/"From The Undertow" -- wouldn't mind getting a copy of that one. Of Peter Gabriel's early singles, I have the UK "Modern Love"/"Slowburn" single (CB 304), with the legendary Nude Picture Label, in NM shape. Also, have the Irish "D.I.Y."/"Perspective" single (CB 311, same as the UK catalog number), with an extended B-side. The single version clocks in at 4:59 -- the LP version, 3:27. And what Gabriel collection would be complete without CB 319 -- the remix "D.I.Y."/"Mother of Violence"/"Me & My Teddy Bear"? I've heard this was deleted shortly after it was released. I remember going to a popular independent record store in New Brunswick, NJ, "Cheap Thrills", after calling them to confirm they had copies, back when it was originally released in '78. I scored four, and gave 3 away. Dummy, I shoulda kept them, I'm sure they're all scratched up, if the people I gave them to even still have them. I kept mine in impeccable shape, absolutely mint. This is a nice item to have, as "Mother of Violence" doesn't have the insect noises at the beginning of it, and of course "...Teddy Bear" is a non-LP track. Wild, seeing Gabriel sing BOTH of those songs in concert in '78! Well that's a sample of some of the cool stuff I have -- anyone else wanna show and tell? PS: I'll take digital shots of any of these and post them, if anyone is interested (I have a few shots of a few of these items, but the files are too big -- I'll need to crop them first). I am not much of a collector. Sounds interesting though...especially the Gabriel stuff. Aside from a few coloured Vinyl lps and sentimental vinyl not much to talk about in my "collection".
Beatles - The Beatles - White Vinyl Stones- Still Life - Picture Disc Pink Floyd - The Wall - Live 3 lp boot The Who - Who Are You - Red Vinyl Jeff Wayne - War of The Worlds Styx - Pieces of Eight - Yellow Vinyl etc. pretty boring stuff ![]()

I was going to try and provide some jpegs, but they are not within the size allowable to post here (PLUS, some are just plain lousy, blurry pictures -- I've GOT to learn how to use that damn camera!) Anyway, there are a LOT of cool collectibles I got. One may actually be a "one-of-a-kind" item: A copy of "Abacab", pressed in white vinyl. It's an oddity, for sure. It's a domestic (US) pressing, "privately" pressed up in the record plant. Here's the history on it: This girl I knew, about 25 years ago or so, had a friend, who had a friend who worked in one of the pressing plants here in the US. This guy reportedly pressed up about 10 of them. They have generic labels (concentric circles), BUT they were clearly pressed at the plant, as they have "TOWNHOUSE LONDON" in the run-out vinyl, as well as (what I guess is) a matrix number: "ST-A-814775" on the A-side, and "ST-A-814776" on the B-side. Those "matrix" numbers are also on the labels of a regular STOCK LP -- obviously, they're not on the labels on THIS white vinyl pressing, since those labels are just generic. The girl said I could have her white vinyl copy if I got her a regular album from the store -- took me about 20 mins to do that. The record itself looks marvelous -- I've cleaned it up as best as I can -- but you can tell the girl beat it up just a little bit in the short time she had it, because it plays VG+ (definitely some pops/tics, and a little noisier at times). But it's an absolutely beautiful item, if you like these sorts of things. And despite the fact that 10 were supposedly pressed, I've never seen any others, or heard about anyone else having one. And I believe Genesis have only officially released TWO records in coloured vinyl: The Canadian "Spot The Pidgeon" 12" EP in blue vinyl, and the UK "Invisible Touch" 7" single in, of course, clear vinyl. Given that, I'm wondering what the potential value of this Abacab record could be. Any thoughts anybody? Definitely not a boring collection! Oh well, 'til next time.
