New TM Remaster: Rainbow 1./2. Januar 77 British Biscuit Reels

This may be interesting to all bootleg collectors. Did you spot the two very exciting things about this new remaster (except for Tom's excellent work, of course) ?Anyway, here is the official announcement:

TM PRODUCTIONS present:

GENESIS

LIVE IN LONDON (THE RAINBOW REELS)

GEN770102TM

1. ELEVENTH EARL OF MAR 7:54
2. ...IN THAT QUIET EARTH 4:45
3. AFTERGLOW 4:11
4. ONE FOR THE VINE 10:09
5. SQUONK 6:12
6. ALL IN A MOUSE'S NIGHT 6:44
7. I KNOW WHAT I LIKE (IN YOUR WARDROBE) 8:19

Total time 49:01

Recorded at Rainbow Theatre, London, 2nd January 1977,
except Squonk, All In A Mouse's Night: Rainbow Theatre, London, 1st January 1977.

Transferred from the original D.I.R. "British Biscuit" broadcast reels (19.05 cm/s, 6.3 mm, half track format) on behalf of GRaSP (Genesis Radio Show Project) and the Meeksgenesis group of collectors. Tape transfer, restoration, mastering and cover design by tom, May-June 2009.

Lineage: Studer A 816 (CCIR-EQing, varispeed) > Prism Sound 24 bit A/D converter > Cedar Cambridge hard disc recording > Cedar Cambridge restoration (noise reduction, de-buzz, phase-correction) > Adobe Audition 3 (manual restoration, editing, mastering, normalizing, fades, conversion to 16 bit).

"Thanks to this radio show Genesis fans were treated to majestic performances of instant classics such as "Eleventh Earl Of Mar" and "One For The Vine", the major epics from "Wind & Wuthering", absurdly excluded from the official live album "Seconds Out", were preserved by the "British Biscuit" in superb stereo sound. In essence, here we have a perfect early example of the "bonus disc".

While the majority of material on the show originates from the second night at the Rainbow, research for this release has revealed that "Squonk" and "All In A Mouses's Night" are actually from the opening night. This surprise revelation raises the tantalising possibility of archive multitrack masters from both gigs, including that legendary medley "Lilywhite Lilith/The Waiting Room/Wot Gorilla" unique to the New Year's Day show. Any hope for additional material rests with the King Biscuit archive (purchased by Wolfgang's Vault in 2006) and perhaps with the band's own archive.

This reworking of the British Biscuit show is based on a TM Productions 24 bit transfer for GRaSP of an original set of Scotch reel-to-reel tapes, acquired via donations from the Meeksgenesis group of collectors. Restoration includes careful application of CEDAR Cambridge noise reduction and EQ which brings out bass frequencies while taking some harshness out of the higher registers, resulting in a rich, clear, smooth flowing soundscape. Close your eyes and experience the magic of Genesis in full flight, as fresh and exhilarating as when the wind of change blew through those opening nights of 1977."
(excerpt from liner notes by David Dunnington)

Rainbow 77

Wow, that's a sweet looking, really well-designed package.

Have you heard this Martin? Is Steve Hackett's playing "up" in the mix?

I'd love to hear these performances ...

It's playing here right now. And "it's been a long long time" since I heard a W&W show that sounded this good. I mean: based on original reels! And Tom really knows his stuff, he is a sound engineer.

It's available for d/l from the Torrent@Movement site, of course.( hint, hint)
