*** SPOILER *** Two Shows in Duesseldorf - a personal review

I’m back from Duesseldorf where I saw both concerts – june 26th and 27th. It was my third Genesis tour after 1987 and 1992, respectively, and I’ve got to say – it was the best so far.

About the setlist: I liked the opening tracks Behind The Lines / Duke’s End. The instrumental intro surprised many fans around me who apparently expected a Phil Collins concert. Turn It On Again was familiar to more people and No Son Of Mine was really celebrated. It appeared to me that some concertgoers were quite happy to finally know a song . Land Of Confusion got less applause – I don’t know why. I always thought it is a very popular song and it was a big hit in the 80’s because of the video. In The Cage / The Cinema Show / Duke’s Travels /Afterglow was a big moment for me. Nearly twenty minutes of wonderful music and lots of goosebumps. Hold On My Heart put me in low spirits for some moments. One of two songs in the setlist that I can’t stand at all.

On every Genesis show that I’ve seen Home By The Sea / Second Home By The Sea was always great. The lightshow is very impressive. Follow You Follow Me was the very first Genesis song I’ve ever heard – this is why I will like this song forever. Firth Of Fifth starts with the guitar solo of Dary Stuermer – he plays it much better than on the „Old Medley“ in ’92. In my opinion he is a very underestimated musician. I Know What I Like is another great live song. It put the whole concert hall into high spirits. Mama was the biggest surprise of the whole evening. I had heard this song in 1987. It was the opening song of the “It”-tour. This time it blew the people away. Ripples gets a special award for „most unknown song“ of the evening – a very beautiful moment. I am grateful about that selection.

Throwing It All Away may be the worst song of the setlist (for me). The majority of the audience thought otherwise obviously. Domino – like “Home By the Sea” – is another impressive live track. The Drum Duett was next – I think it is a little bit too long but I liked the bar stool part. It is inventive and funny. Los Endos is the highpoint of the show – just terrific. I don’t understand why they don’t play this at the end of the regular show. Instead they carry on with Tonight Tonight Tonight/ Invisible Touch before the encore break. I Can’t Dance ist he first encore – it may be the most popular song of the show. The light effects are cute. The Carpet Crawlers to end the show is actually very moving. I did not expect that.

There were some complaints about the sound, but I guess it is impossible to get a perfect sound in a football (soccer for our American members ) stadium. The stage design is impressive – but it is “wavelike” and I estimate that about one fifth of all people cannot see all the effects. That may be the one point that I really don’t like about the show. I've seen Roger Waters and Muse recently. Both had great lightshows, too, but the whole audience could see it.

But all in all – I’m very thrilled about the shows. Have fun!

Hey DocFeatherfield, what a great review! And your pictures are terrific! Good job. I am glad that you had a good time and that you got goosebumps during "Los Endos". I get them too when they play that . I was amazed to hear that they ended with "Carpet Crawlers". I'm also glad that they threw in "Ripples". It is a good song for those who love the W&W album such as I. From us Americans who have to wait a few months for our concert, we thank you very much!
