Genesis concert: July 14, Rome

Telecom Progetto Italia offers the city of Rome the Genesis concert. The appointment is for Saturday 14 July, at 14:00 at Circo Massimo.

After Paul Mc Cartney, Simon & Garfunkel, Elton John, Billy Joel and Bryan Adams Telecom Progetto Italia's initiative continues. Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford, the lions of the pop/rock world, after more of a decade of silence, reunite for a tour that touches 21 European cities and that Rome, at Circo Massimo, celebrates the one and only Italian date. The public will be able to follow from home the magical atmosphere at the Circo Massimo and the wait of the more than 600 thousand people expected online at Progetto Italia - home page from 14:00 and until the beginning of the concert the public will be able to live from home, thanks to internet, an unrepeatable event.

The online special Telecomcerto 2007 Genesis will propose services LIVE from Circo Massimo, interviews with the band, backstage videos, interviews with the public, unpublished material and numerous clips, hundreds of photographs documenting every minute of an historical day for music and its fans.

We'll see you all on Progetto Italia - home page.

Numbers

I've just got to a computer after seeing the Rome gig!!

We got there at around 4.30 in the afternoon and I would say that at that point there were around 10 - 20,000 people there. There was the obvious group at the front which reached to the first camera stand and then a load of people gathered on the left bank (as you look at the stage).

We got out blanket down as close to the front as we could (to the right of the camera stand) and picnic-ed for hours.

I already knew that the gig was not due to begin until 21.30 from some trawling I'd done on a site somewhere and so was really looking forward to the light show. Manchester was a good gig but the early start on such a sunny summers day meant that the first half of the stage show was a bit lost in the remaining day light.

Not so in Rome. Genesis came on as the sun went down and the so the impact of the show was maximised.

I tried to guage numbers but it was impossible to tell how many people were behind us.

The set list was the same as Manchester but there were some screw ups. I saw on the 'blog' that Tony Banks got the blame - but not to my ears. Both major screw ups were drum related in my opinion. I think Phil ballsed up.

Major highlight in Rome was 'I Know what I like' the whole crowd knew the words and sang along really loudly. Phil even acknowlegded this.

The Romans around us were great. They even 'la la laaad' their way through 'Firth of Fifth' really loudly which was the first time I've ever heard anyone do that before.

Anyway - I'm not trying to write a review..

What I want to know is

1) Has anyone found any picytures from Rome that might show the audience size?
2) Has anyone heard any official reports of numbers?

I did hear that the Rome Newspaper claimed 1 Million people - but I don't think that can be true as it was very easy to get out.

I would guess at around 250,000 but as I say earlier, I couldn't really see behind until we were on our way out.

pictures

Well I've seen some of the photos from Rome now and I must say that there are a lot more people there then I thought.

So I revise my 250,000 and double it.

half a million people at least.

Sounds like you had a pretty good speck, i was standing half way up the slope on the left hand side near the 1st aid tent, the view i had was fabulous, not one big head or tall person in front of me, i heard there was 600,000 people there & i wouldnt argue with that because as i was on a slope i could see quite a way back, it was breathtaking the amount of people that were there, & what views we had of the ancient ruins in the background especially when the concert started & the lights were in full swing, i took some terrific photos, I also remember phil saying it was special & it sure was.
I was also at the manchester gig & i thought that was superb but if im gonna be honest, Nothing will ever the beat the feelings & experience i had in Circo Massimo, to me the music was better, the lighting was better, even Phils vocals sounded louder & stronger, i cant wait to see the DVD.
It was so cool to see a lot of brits over there, going & coming home on the plane all fans together the atmosphere was great, iv made quite a few friends. GENESIS know how to throw a party.
To all you forum fans who live state side, all i can say is you are in for a real treat & believe me it`ll be worth the wait,
God bless Genesis and all who sing with them!!

Hey Visions, it sure sounds like you had a great time. Thanks for the great review of a concert some of us wish we could have been at. I hope that I can give you a great review when I see them in September here in the US. But then again, how cool was it to see Genesis in Rome! Thanks again!
