Genesis news

Welcome to the provisional news centre!

Since Christian is the only one with the administrative rights to add news item to the website and since he is currently very busy with the re-launch of the German part of the site (the international half will follow once we have sorted out everything) ... well, to be brief, we currently lack the resources to update the news page as often as we should/could.
For a website that is called genesis-news this is not a tenable position, so this thread is the workaround. News items concerning Genesis will be posted here.

Genesis box set part III: 1970-1975

Part III: 1970-1975

The record from 1970 to 1975 on SACD/DVD + Bonus SACD/DVD*

*in Europe; US releases will consist of CD / DVD sets

general information:

The third bunch of releases will be published on September 12, 2008. It will consist of all the studio records from 19770 through to 1975, that is:

- Trespass
- Nursery Cryme
- Foxtrot
- Selling England By The Pound
- The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway

Everything was mixed afresh on the basis of the old multi-track tapes. Because the first records were originally recorded on 8-track or 16-track tapes there are a couple of limitations in the 5.1 sound.

In Europe, SACD / DVD double discs will be published. It is currently unclear whether there will be one or two bonus DVDs to accompany The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway.

A bonus SACD / DVD will also become available, but only as part of the complete box set consisting of all the other five albums (or four records and one double record). The bonus disc will have the non-album tracks from the period in question.

Genesis 1970-1975 Boxset

The box set will consist of the albums Trespass, Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England By The Pound and The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway.
It will also include a bonus SACD/DVD (North America: CD / DVD) with these non-album tracks:

- Twilight Alehouse
- Happy The Man

According to what Nick Davis has said the songs from the Jackson Tape will also be included on the bonus SACD / DVD. The four pieces are entitled:
- Provocation
- Frustration
- Manipulation
- Resignation

Further extras are not yet known.

The SACD will hold these audio formats:
- CD stereo (playable in all CD players)
- SACD stereo (playable on SACD players only)
- SACD 5.1 surround (playable only on SACD players with an 5.1-capable sound system)

The North American release will not include SACDs. It will have a normal CD instead. The DVDs include the complete album in Dolby Digital 51. and 96kHz / 24bit dts, as well as bonus video material. The box set will also have a booklet. As of now, little is known about the artwork except that the box will be green.

Genesis: Live Chat with Tony Smith

Smith on the reasons for the tour and the band's plans for the future

On Saturday, March 01, 2008 there was a 45-minute live chat with Genesis manager Tony Smith on the official Genesis website. Despite the short space of time Tony gave comprehensive and interesting answers to many questions.

Here is a summary of the most important bits:

- A continuation of the Turn It On Again tour has not been ruled out completely. There seems to be an interest to tour, particularly in South America. Further arena shows are still an option (the UK and the US were mentioned in this context). The main problems with this are the timing and , as far as South America is concerned, sponsorship because they would play fewer shows there than in North America or Europe.
- Rumours that Genesis might play concerts in the London O2 Arena, the former Millennium Dome, in autumn 2008 were described by Tony Smith as "wishful thinking".
- A reunion with Peter and / or Steve is not completely impossible. Because of the difficulties in getting them all together and the lack of definitive statements, particularly by Peter Gabriel, such a putative reunion is not going to happen in the foreseeable future.
- The idea behind releasing the box set 1970-1975 as the last of the three was to link this to a re-staging of the Lamb tour. Because there are no signs for a "big reunion", whatever shape it may take, and because plans for a Lamb tour kept being pushed back, the box set will now be released in autumn - with an accompanying tour, of course.

Further details and the exact wording of Tony's answer can be looked up in the chat protocol that hase been put up on the official Genesis website.

Yeah, I know this is the Genesis area of the forum, but I think it is better to have all news items in one place instead of all over the place....

Peter Gabriel: New song on the "Wall*E" soundtrack

"Down To Earth" in collaboration with Thomas Newman

Peter Gabriel has let himself get distracted from work on his new album once more and contributed a new song for the PIXAR film Wall*E.
The song is called Down To Earth and Gabriel wrote it together with Thomas Newman. Many Genesis fans will have heard at least one piece by Newman as Genesis used his instrumental Dead Already as the intro to their live shows.
Down To Earth, however, is no instrumental but a full-fledged song with Peter Gabriel on the vocals.
The Wall*E soundtrack is to be released in Europe in July, but is is already available in the US (and as an US import) if you follow this link (to amazon.com) or this link (to amazon.co.uk)

Tony Banks: A Curious Feeling on SACD?

Nick Davis hints at a possibility...

The question was inevitable: Will there be further releases on SACD once all the Genesis records have been released? It was quite surprising, though, that they answer may be "yes, Tony Banks' A Curious Feeling."

Nick Davis, producer for Genesis, several solo records and moreover in charge of the Genesis SACDs hinted at this in the official forum:

Q: Are there any considerations either by Tony Smith or the band to remix or remaster Genesis solo projects? I am thinking along the lines of Tony Banks' first three records (A Curious Feeling, The Fugitive and The Wicked Lady), Mike's first two albums, the first Mechanics release and the first three or four albums Phil has released. If you look at what you have accomplished with the Genesis catalogue I do hope you have considered it at least in passing.
Nick Davis[note - this is a retranslation into English. These are not the words Nick Davis said/wrote]: Tony mentioned that he would like to have a go at A Curious Feeling sometime. I have not heard anything about the other albums. One of the live DVDs may be next (from the Mama tour or Three Sides Live), but I have no idea when. We will let you know when something starts to happen.

Paul Carrack support act on Eagles' tour

Okay, out with a couple of news items after I have been offline for over a day...sodding Vista crashed on me so I had to reinstall... and that bloody greedy install routine nicked the boot manager ("why would anyone in their right mind want to use anything but Windoze, right?") So now I gotta find out how to uninstall one of my now two Ubuntus, but anyway, to get on with the show:

Paul Carrack opens a couple of shows for The Eagles
Friday May 29th Malmo Stadium, Malmo, Sweden

Saturday May 30th Aarhus Stadium, Aarhus, Denmark
Saturday July 4th Hampden Park, Glasgow, Scotland
Saturday July 18th The Gelredrome, Arnhem, Netherlands.

Mike And The currently unknown number of Mechanics

Mike Rutherford is working on a new Mechanics album, Paul Carrack confirms in an interview with artrock magazine "Empire" (current edition). Carrack added that he will not be involved in the project. Apparently Mike Rutherford is going to work with a number of different singers.

Rutherford has recently been in the news with a charity project for which several musicians recorded a version of Six O'Clock In The Morning with instruments made from car parts. The video is available at youtube.

Collins working on a new album?

Daryl Stuermer mentioned in an interview (dating from April 17, 2009) that Phil Collins is apparently working on an album full of cover songs for which he asked Daryl to transcribe the music of a Temptations' song. Currently, no further information about the songs or even a release date is available.

Phil' most recent album Testify was released in 2002. A year after that he published further songs on the Brother Bear soundtrack. Fans have been waiting for a new studio album since then.

Listen to the interview with Daryl Stuermer (the interesting bits begin at around 14:00).

Surround sound only on DVD, says Nick Davis

Nick Davis, resident producer for Genesis and the man in charge of the new box set remixes confirmed in the official forum that the upcoming live boxset will not have SACD layers.
The studio album boxs sets 1970-1975, 1976-1982 and 1983-1998 all had hybrid-SACD/CD double discs that could be also played with normal CD players. No explanation has been given as to why Genesis abandon this concept for the live boxset. The upcoming release will consist of CD/DVD 2 disc sets, so there will be no high-resolution SACD surround sound. Friends of surround sound will have to make do with the dts or Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks.
