I need some opinions on purchases!
Hi everyone, I recently became addicted to Genesis, started with Foxtrot and now I enjoy Chryme through to Wind&Wuthering. I just picked up Turn it on Again to check out all the stuff that came after, it was a little dissapointing, although i thought it would be. I do think Id still really enjoy Duke and Then there was three, from your experiences do most early album fans enjoy those albums? Should I get Trespass? I was also thinking of getting the box set for 1970-75 for the dvds and remixes, how are those? Maybe that can be my copy of Trespass because I have the Definitive masters for the rest. Any opinions will help!

Huh, lots of questions! Let's see. You already have Nursery Cryme through to Wind & Wuthering, so you don't have From Genesis To Revelation, Trespass, and all the live and studio albums from Seconds Out / And Then There Were Three onwards. Where to go next? I would say the next logical step for you is Duke. It is Genesis' first album in the 80s but it is their last record with a larger amount of progressive elements. The Duke Suite, particularly Duke's Travels & End, or Heathaze retain the flair of musical storytelling Genesis enjoyed in the 70s (e.g. The Fountain Of Salmacis or One For The Vine) while their music has moved on into the 80s. That is actually also the reason I would recommend you skip And Then There Were Three for the time being. I like to call it a transitional album; Genesis had decided they could not / would not continue in the old style and write Supper's Ready XII or The Old Ewe Still Lies On Broadway - but they had not yet figured out where to go. The outcome was an album that is neither here nor there, with a couple of nice moments, but devoid of a new direction (and totally swamped with keyboards...). Trespass is a definite yes. It has some gems on it, e.g. White Mountain and, of course, The Knife. I am sure you will enjoy that. The albums Genesis released after Duke: It is quite likely that you will not enjoy Abacab very much at first. It is Genesis most daring album... and must have shocked many fans. In fact, when Genesis played Leiden, The Netherlands, on their Abacab tour they were almost booed off the stage when the played the new songs. The self-titled album (also known as "Shapes" after the cover image or "Mama" after its first song) may be a good choice after Duke. From there it is not such a long way to Invisible Touch - but beware, that one has a high pop factor (but it also has Domino). After that, We Can't Dance. I would also recommend you get yourself Calling All Stations. It is kind of the unloved Genesis step-child, but I think it is actually a good album with lots of enjoyable ideas. And if you are all out of new material to listen to you could buy the Archive 1967-1975 (the brown one) which has a Lamb concert recording (sort of), some live tracks from the Selling England tour and lots and lots of demo material from the time Genesis recorded their very first album, From Genesis To Revelation. The green box set is a good idea. The new mixes have a much better audio quality than any other version released so far, you get to see the whole Lamb slide show - plus a brand new old recording, the Jackson Tape that has finally been released some 38 years after it was recorded. Oh, and keep the DER CDs as they have gone out of print. The box set has the Nick Davis mixes, and they are occasionally a bit different in the details.

Thanks, after snooping around the site I decided to at least get the 1970-75 box set and maybe the 1976 - 82, If i can't afford all that for a while I will pick up Duke and Trespass seperately. I saw then there were three for fairly cheap so maybe that too. The question is do I drop the huge chunk for the 1970-75 box set first, been tempted thats for sure! How are all the interviews and bonus footage?

The "green box" is worth every penny (or cent, in your case) - doubly so if you own a surround sound system.
If you want/need to save some money after that try picking up DERs of Duke and ATTW3. You should be able to get them for a decent price at the internet auction platform of your choice. The interviews are excellent and the live footage is very good considering its age.

I love how I misspelled my name, lol frig. Kights
Anyways, I do have the tour edition of Turn it on again the hits. Im pretty sure I wont buy anything after Duke as it seems to have half of those albums on the damn cd. Plus I can't say I really enjoy much of it. Is there any hidden gems on those albums I should know about and maybe get on I tunes or something? Domino? I think i want those two early box sets, im a big nerd for that kind of thing, plus Im pretty obsessed with those albums right now i wouldnt mind owning some twice. Its too bad the canadian version is regular cd not sacd and the european is pal dvd. I wanted to use my ps3's sacd player. I think i need to get all of of Peters solo albums too, I think i really enjoy his voice and lyrics. |

Hi again, i got the 1970-75 boxset. Excellent stuff! I haven't listened to everything, did listen to Selling England on my dads 5.1 but I unfourtunately don't have my own yet. I have hours of live footage and interviews to watch which is exciting. Im definitely getting 1976-82 so I can get TTWT, Duke, and Abacab. Great box set even if you don't like the new stereo mixes (I mostly do but some weird stuff, what happend to Back in NYC? Wheres the crazy vocal effect in the chorus?)
