I've never read any comments from Phil on this. And I was wondering also whether anyone had read any comments from Peter on later Genesis material?

not awful or pointless IMHO. In fact, the best Genesis album since Duke. Back to the old darker sound, more drama, more progressive rock. I loved CAS from the get go. Ray was the perfect voice for the material, and tell me these are NOT classic Genesis songs; Dividing Line, There Must Be Some Other Way, Uncertain Weather, One Man's Fool, CAS, Not About Us, heck even Congo.
People who diss the album simply because Phil wasn't singing are as clueless as those who diss Phil era Genesis simply because Peter wasn't singing. Sorry to be so harsh, but that's the truth. In the end, its all about the sound, the music, the songs and the atmosphere. CAS is a gem. |

I love CAS. The only song I never could get into was Shipwrecked. Well, alright, and Small Talk. But honestly, aside from those two, I love it, top to bottom.
The Dividing Line is such a powerful song and is perhaps my favorite intro to any Genesis song. The progressive pieces are just awesome, and while the Collins era attempted to do that post-Abacab (some successfully, ex. "Home By the Sea", "Domino", and "Fading Lights"), I don't think they match the quality of some of the songs on CAS. "One Man's Fool" is definitely a serious highlight that I feel is ridiculously overlooked. Has that old school Banks keyboard sound to it, I'd say. Certainly not awful or pointless. While I consider "We Can't Dance" my second favorite Genesis album, musically I agree with Squonkman, that it's their finest since Duke.

OUCH Jeb, though two founding members of the band was still in the band, therefore, it IS a Genesis album, IMO!
