That show was absolutely phenomenal. I was up in section 314 and I was just beside myself the whole concert. The musicianship was top notch, the stage show was incredible. Oh man, what a concert! Best show of my life, easily.

Details:
Section 122 - row 9 - 2 sections in from stage on Tony Bank's side / loge Age 43 + 12 year old son (lefty drummer ) Times seen Genesis : 14 (?) Thoughts: 2nd best seats I had for a Genesis show, very close to Tony 2 sections in. Best seats ever 8th row center floor in New Haven in '82 for the Supper's Ready performance tour (10th aniversary ?) I will quibble about the seats at the end of my ramblings as I don't want to incite a riot. I enjoyed the show overall, if it was somewhat bittersweet . I got the feeling throughout it was the last time I'd hear the music played Loved the fact that they opened with Behind the Lines because I'm prodominantly a middle genesis fan - Lamb/Trick/Wind **/ SecondsOut /ATTWT/Duke/Ababab' are the albums I listen to most. I do have to voice some concern over the sound system, either it was the mixing, or my bad ears, but I had some trouble hearing Phil on some higher notes, Tony on some solo's as well as Mike and Daryl's ....It could be me - but it sounded a bit muddled to me at times. Standouts for me : Behind the Lines/Duke'sEnd/Turn it on Again - (duke fan) great sound Follow you Follow Me - very pleasant liked having Phil on drums during this. 2nd Home by the Sea - very strong instrumental (excellent sound here....) I know what I Like - may have replaced In the Cage as my favorite concert piece for Genesis....wow..... Domino - ok it's my 12 year olds favorite song - (who was with me)Drum Duet - my 12 year old is a lefty drummer what can I say - and I love Phil/ChesterLos Endos - still a phenominal song to hear live - Throwing it all away - did I just write that ? yes....I did....nice crowd piece Carpet Crawlers - great song- again tho, vocals a problem for me at times in the sound I'd recommend getting rid of Hold on my Heart, and re-pacing the ending 4 songs. I lost interest in Genesis during the Invisible touch/We Can't Dance years- but I think another encore might have been warranted - as I don't care for I can't Dance . I guess there's no getting around paying Invisible touch, but I would have loved to have seen one more piece in there somehow - ending with Carpet Crawlers is tricky - as I heard a ton of folks who didn't know it wondering why such a quiet song to end . I think I would have loved to hear something with Phil back on the drums for a 3rd song - prior to CC is fine . Maybe Abacab ? Lamb Lies Down on Broadway ? Squonk ? I think We Can't Dance/ Lamb/ Carpet crawl ?? As to the staging - very impressive - but I miss the Duke/Abacab/3 sides live ?genesis era of tours regarding lighting and smoke. In the Cage, Afterglow, Los Endos, etc...etc... are forever etched in my memory with phenominal Vari-light technology. While the LEDs behind made for some nice effects - I missed the plain old music plus complex lighting patterns - I remember also the Genesis tour (mama) that had the entire lighting system drop and raise during Home by the Sea.... Anyway my biggest comment on the night was - don't shoot me - I go to concerts to hear Genesis music aka musicianship. I had my 12 year old with me as I noted above - and I grew very tired of people standing throughout the show....instrumentals, ballads, what have you. I know...some folks go to concerts to 'have fun', 'dance' etc....but I just wish folks could have sat a bit more (In the Cage - to my thinking - isn't a dance tune) I know being on the floor almost always has standing folks - but I thought being very close, on the side, 10 rows up, was going to be perfect...and I just felt let down I had to see over people - as did my son. Anyway - minor complaint - it wasn't the best Genesis show I've seen - but it was still very nice to see them after all these years. Here's hoping they make enough money, spark enough interest to continue writing music again, and perhaps tour again , in this lineup - or with Steve and Peter. /bow Genesis - you've been the biggest musical influence to me over the years. |

So I'm curious, if you've seen Genesis 14 times, where would this Boston show rank? Maybe top 5, top 10, last? Just curious.

I think my 'review' came off harsher than it should have - I greatly enjoyed the show. It was definately tainted by not being able to sit during several of the longer pieces of music and take full advantage of my seats.
If I had to rate the show I'd say 8/10 due to the line of sight issues and the fact I missed some of the older staging. That may have been because those were the first times I saw the songs performed ....especially In the Cage.....there was always something wicked about the shows during 79-84 after....."without any reason, my body revolves......" ......<insert wicked lighting> ![]() I have a hard time remembering the various shows exactly from the past, including lots of Phil Collins/ Peter Gabriel shows...but I think this show would sit around 4-5 out of the 14 (or 13...memory faulty) Genesis shows seen. I believe 2 New Haven shows and one Hartford show sit up there for 1-3, and that was probably due to the fact that they played Supper's Ready, Squonk , Dance on a Volcano and some other songs that were my faves. So - last nights show was great - I just didn't like having to stand and/or look around people seeing as I was 30 yards from Tony. Interestingly enough this morning on local boston radio 100.7 they were complaining about lack of 'fun/popular' songs in the set. One DJ was sarcastically saying "they didn't play Groovy kind of love ? Sussudio ? " There was also a first hand report by a female disc jockey about security having to intercede on someone's behalf to get some other folks to sit down - Granted these same DJ's were arguing about whether the show opened with Land of Confusion or Turn it On Again. ....they seemingly didn't remember Behind the Lines/Dukes' End nor No Son of Mine in there. They also commented on no Abacab songs being very suprising - |

I felt it the same way, longer songs are better appreciated when you can listen to them confortably, i was staying as well one of the two times i saw this show in EU. Curiously, when i saw Genesis back in 76/77 (both tours) we were much younger and more sporty, but we could at least sit - or better - lay down to appreciate the show. Why did this way of listening dissapear in the 00's? There where enough place, even more than in the 70's to lay down, but why all people stood politely durring the whole gig? Quote:

I am bummed since I had tickets and had to miss the concert (recovering from cervical surgery) after waiting about 20 years to see them again -Greg |
