Genesis tour lacks Gabriel, Hackett
By DENIS ARMSTRONG -- Sun Media It's hard to believe fans still get angry over who the real Genesis is some 30 years after Peter Gabriel left the prog-rock giant. Is it the one fronted by the theatrical Peter Gabriel or the more bubblicious, pop-song conveyor-belt headed by Phil Collins that plays Scotiabank Place tonight? It should be a moot point. But when Collins, keyboard-player Tony Banks and bass guitarist Mike Rutherford, with drummer Chester Thompson and guitarist Daryl Stuermer, crank up their Turn It On Again concert, there will be a few grumpy diehards looking for Gabriel and guitarist Steve Hackett. Mind you, selling 150 million records to become one of the top-five-selling bands of all time goes a long way to ease some of the shame of being accused for the last 30 years of being one of the biggest sellouts in music. Call this the evolution, or devolution of a band called Genesis. In the beginning, there was a young band of progressive rockers whose music was unlike anything anyone had ever heard, with arrangements only a virtuoso could perform and a charismatic singer who wore theatrical costumes and sang about mythological figures. True to its name, Genesis inspired a near-religious following with two albums in the early 1970s, Trespass and Nursery Cryme. For one 16-year-old in 1973, seeing Genesis perform at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto was like a musical version of the fantasy board game Dungeons & Dragons. I can still see Gabriel in Day-Glo makeup and bat's wings on his head singing Watcher of the Skies and as the withered old man of the mythological fable Supper's Ready. Incidentally, videos of those performances have recently popped up on YouTube. Not many bands inspire their own imitators, but a couple years ago, I saw the wonderfully eccentric Genesis tribute band The Musical Box. Not surprisingly, Lac Leamy's Theatre was buzzing with excited middle-aged men, most who, like myself I imagine, had long dreamt of one day seeing Genesis play their 1973 portrait of a battered and bruised Britain, Selling England By The Pound, or their swan-song, the epic tribute to America The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. But there comes a time when even a hard-bitten Genesis fan has to move on. For the band, that time came in 1976 with the group's first post-Gabriel release A Trick of the Tail and the Emily Bronte-inspired romance Wind and Wuthering. Each record carried on with Gabriel's spirit. But after guitarist Hackett left the band, the remaining three members released the more commercial album ...And Then There Were Three, which had their first real radio hit with Follow You Follow Me. Soon after, Collins released the multi-platinum solo record Face Value in 1981 while the band scored two top-10 hits, Misunderstanding and Turn It On Again, from the album Duke. Once they began hitting the top of the charts, there was no stopping them. In 1986, spurred in part by Collins' incredible popularity as a solo artist, Genesis released its highest-selling record, Invisible Touch. For many of their earliest fans, it was shocking how far the band had fallen creatively. Now, 15 years after finally packing it in, Genesis is touring again with Turn It On Again, a two-CD retrospective that spans both versions of the band. The reviews have been generally good. The two-hour-plus show is visually dazzling and the boys are in the mood to play. But, mark my words, this is only a warm-up for a larger tour next year with Gabriel and Hackett. Then, everyone will be happy. __________________________________________________ ____ omg...written by a fan in the media...i thought they were extinct...j62

Genesis turns it on for Ottawa fans
By Patrick Langston, Ottawa Citizen Published: Saturday, September 15, 2007 True, there were no surprises when the steamroller called Genesis rolled into Scotiabank Place last night. Then again, the 14,000 folks in the sold-out audience weren't there for surprises, but rather for a night of much-loved and smoothly delivered rock tunes from the 1970s, '80s and '90s. Which is exactly what they got. Greeted by a standing ovation, the British trio - once one of the world's most popular bands - performed Turn It On Again, No Son Of Mine, Land Of Confusion and others on a massive, dramatic stage. A 70-metre long, rollercoaster-like screen, meanwhile, glittered with lights and video simulations behind the trio. Over the stage, yet more lights shone down, perhaps a nod to the middle-aged eyes of frontman Phil Collins, bassist Mike Rutherford and keyboardist Tony Banks (the three were helped out by Chester Thompson on drums and Dan Stuermer on guitar). "Any old people here tonight?" asked Collins early in the set. Audience roar. "Older than us, that is?" he added with a laugh. More roar. This was a little after he greeted his audience in old-fashioned and slightly ironic fashion with, "We are Genesis and we are your entertainment tonight." In true Genesis fashion, last night's show included jams, romantic pop and a bit of prog rock pomp from the band's early days when Peter Gabriel, who left for a solo career in 1974, fronted the band and Collins played drums (Collins clambered aboard a second drum kit several times last night). In fact, Gabriel was originally asked to join this tour, the band's first in 15 years, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, a double concept album. Gabriel, for reasons of his own, declined. Ottawa was one of only three Canadian stops on the band's current tour. Last night's set list was virtually identical to the one the band worked out for both the European and North American legs of the tour, including tunes like 1992's Hold On My Heart, which the ever-emotive Collins sang while perched on a stool. A veteran crowd worker, last night Collins elicited clap-alongs, singsongs and every manner of audience participation he could have asked for. He also snapped pictures of the audience on a digital camera at one point and later slapped his knees and feet with a tambourine, which unaccountably drew a rapturous response from the audience. Those moves were probably all wise, as Collins is not a very dynamic performer, relying instead on his vocal prowess and the band's big instrumentation for excitement. Not that keyboard player Banks looked very excited. He spent most of the night, at least from what we saw on the two oval video screens bookending the stage, glowering at his instrument. His long-time band mate Rutherford broke into an occasional quiet grin. As press time loomed, Collins was cackling his way through 1983's Mama, the menacing tune that was the band's biggest U.K. hit and a clear favorite with Ottawa fans. __________________________________________________ _________ promising review but where is the rest of it...there is no "press time" on the web..........grrrrrrrrrr ![]()

You got to laugh at these reviewers who are irritated that Tony and Mike don't "do" stuff and poke fun at their expressions. A sure giveaway that they have never seen Genesis and have no clue. What do they want Tony to do, somersaults and jumping jacks? Maybe they were expecting Keith Emerson.
Hey Mr Langston, this isn't a rap act. Its about the music knucklehead. |

Like the band themselves, I do not even pay attention to the reviews anymore. It's like this, I do not care what anyone says, or how many people are there, I will enjoy my favorite band....AWESOME

"(the three were helped out by Chester Thompson on drums and Dan Stuermer on guitar). "
"dan" huh? anyone that cant even get their NAMES correct shouldnt be given much credibilty. if you need more evidence, just look at the songs mentioned in the review. the unknowing (commercial minded) reviewer ALWAYS mentions the 80's hits and actually writes as if those were somehow the highlight of the show. yeah, whatever pal. |

I agree. Daryl has only been playing with them for, oh, 29 years, and plays on every Collins solo tour as well. Sheesh. |
