But first, this isn't me being anti-Phil, or stirring, or 'trolling' etc. It's merely a theory to prompt some discussion.

Here goes:

Perhaps, deep down Phil feels that he is inferior (in musical creativity and imagination) to Peter. And this perhaps is the main reason why he treats the Gabriel-era with such apparent disdain - and why perhaps he makes strange statements about fans wanting LOC more than Supper's Ready.

Now, I know that Peter and Phil are buddies (I think Phil was best man at Peter's wedding wasn't he? or vice-versa?) but it's quite common in close friendships for one person to feel inferior top the other.

I think McCartney always felt inferior to Lennon for example.

Thoughts?

I think your obsession with this topic indicates a deep seeded inferiority complex to Phil, manifesting itself with these curmudgeonly posts. How's that for some dime store psychology?

hehe.

Yes, I am musically inferior to Phil! He is without doubt a better singer and a better drummer than me.

I can sing quite well, but I've never been able to hit the very high 'follow me!' note that Phil reaches in One for the Vine! damn it!

but seriously, do you think there could be any truth in my theory?

Phil may simply be a bit p*d off because more than thirty years after he became the singer with Genesis "the Gabriel question" still comes up as if his (Phil's) era somehow did not count, or was not as important, or was inferior to the Peter era. It must be very grating if - no matter how much success you enjoyed - wherever he goes there is still somebody who asks about Peter.

It's like Queen Elizabeth II opening a new museum, and decides to give an interview and one of the questions she's asked is did she think that George VI wouldn't have done better?

I think this says it best.

i think phil looks back FONDLY on the gabriel years, but i think he ALSO gets frustrated at certain peoples inability to look PAST those years.

This may sound strange comming from a fan who prefers the Gabe. era
[ very much enjoy the phil era also ] as far as Phil's era not counting , Phils been with the band almost what , 40 yrs , took over on volcals some 30 odd yrs ago , the success Genesis has had compared to the Gabe era is phenomenal !
I don't think theres another band to date , that has had as much success
when replacing the lead singer [ album-ticket sales ] and to add , each have a successful solo career .

I think deep down, Phil really DOES just want to retire from touring...Look at it this way...he can live two lifetimes off of royalties from ITAT....I think he just wants to stop !

Do you really think so, Danlaw? I'd rather think that Phil would love to tour if it could be done without the hassle it brings.
