I do remember that Uptown 78 show recording...my buddy recorded it to cassette, I have no idea where my buddy is today.

We used to listen to that show, 2 things stick out in my mind.

After having played the Chicago Stadium earlier on the tour, Phil remarked how nice it was to be back in Chicago and in a theatre as well (Uptown, not very big, maybe 3000?...Saw PG there too for the "Melt" tour, one of the best concerts I've ever seen, also revered by XRT disc jockeys).

But even more than that was just a stunning rendition of Ripples. You might want to check the WXRT website for their Sunday night concert vault programming. I'll take a look today...they must still have the recording.

I have the recording, called Master of Chicago on the Highland "label". It used to be the best version but now someone has done an upgrade from a better source called SAB 5 ver 2 which is supposed to be the definitive one, which I need to track down. I am always looking to tape directly off radio when I can to get the best possible versions and I know they sometimes rebroadcast stuff.

If I remember right, Phil said something about the sound being lousy or tech problems at Chicago Stadium when they played earlier so they did this Uptown gig as an extra to make up for the earlier concert.

Chicago Stadium was acoustically a nightmare for any band that played there. Earlofmar07, I only went to five Genesis shows in my life, and four of them are on your list.

8-3-82 Poplar Creek (my first concert ever: age of 15)
11-11-83 Rosemont Horizon
10-6-86 Rosemont Horizon
10-10-86 " " (Only one of mine not on your list - They did 6 nights)
10-4-07 United Center (probably my favorite of all 5 I saw)

Three moments that stuck out? From the 07 show:
1) Phil doing the Tamborine Dance with old video of him doing it on the screen.
2) Drum duet and Los Endos. Master musicians at work.
3) The Carpet Crawlers...singing along with my brother with our arms over each other's shoulder.

The Poplar Creek shows were top notch.

It was at these shows that it I was sure Phil was setting up The Cinema Show with the story and ending line, "Hurry Romeo, you're going to miss the Cinema Show!", but instead ended the story with "Hurry Romeo, your Supper's Ready!" Wish I had a picture of my face at that moment.

speaking of Chicago and this tour, before and after each show I was listening to WDRV? I think and they played an hour of Genesis both before and after each show, and the last night they were playing live stuff off of one of the Encore series shows from Europe! (they didn't say which one). They played some pretty obscure tunes too, ones you don't normally hear on the radio, although they seemed fixated on playing stuff from Abacab which I found a little odd since no Abacab songs were being done on this tour.

yep, it was the 82 Encore tour where Phil did the Romeo and Juliet "tied to the steering wheel" story which used to be the lead in to Cinema Show and changed it to lead into Suppers Ready. I too was completely shocked with joy in those days where we all didn't know the setlists ahead of time.

by the way, where were you guys BEFORE the Chicago concerts?, we could have met up and tipped a few back and traded some Genesis stories.

My older brother worked as a parking lot attendant at Poplar Creek in '82. He said everyone who worked there said Genesis were the best shows of that summer.

Yes, I did not know the setlist ahead of time, and learned a lesson about being a know it all when I proclaimed Cinema Show as Phil set up Supper's Ready.

On a later tour ( I'm getting them mixed up now) at the Rosemont Horizon, when they "slipped" Apocalypse in 9/8 inot the medley, I remember a woman behind me saying that "they're not supposed to play this!" and I have always wanted to ask her why not? Because Peter Gabriel isn't on stage? I still get peaved about this overheard comment. I guess I have to give her some credit for knowing what they were playing.

you got to see the Cage medley with Apocalypse in 9/8 as the ending on the IT tour before they reverted back to the Afterglow ending. Again I am envious because by the time I saw that tour in early 87 they were doing Afterglow. The woman probably knew from Three Sides Live (or previous concerts) that they usually did Cage/Cinema Show/Afterglow. In 86 they did Cage/Quiet Earth/Apocalypse and later changed it to Cage/Quiet Earth/Afterglow.

the medley with the Suppers Ready ending is preserved on the King Biscuit show they recorded from LA on that tour and sounds awesome

You know, I'm getting goosebumps right now remembering the moment when they 9/8'd the medley. For a split second, I didn't realise what what was going on, and then of course it hit me what they were playing, but it threw me because my ear had been trained to expect something else at that juncture of the medley.

Now I may be wrong, but I think they played the whole thing out all the way thru the New Jerusalem and faded out just like the recording.

that is true, they played it all the way to the end. And they played it AFTER the Quiet Earth part, so it was Cage/Quiet Earth/ Apocalypse in 9/8. I don't know why they reverted back to Afterglow, maybe Phil thought it too demanding vocally?

I just hope someone with Genesis had the foresight to multitrack record an encore tour show (82) where they last played the whole Suppers Ready, and will someday release it in an achive box or something. For some reason that tour didn't have any radio broadcasts and the boots aren't all that great.
