Phil's cover songs - which ones are good?
From his debut album onwards Phil has covered a number of songs. Which one works best?
I'm really looking forward to the results of this poll. ... oh, and pray also tell if there's a cover song you cannot stand.

There is not ONE bad song on the list, MAYBE Tears Of A Clown was a stretch, but BURN DOWN THE MISSION, is just AWESOME!

You can't hurry love !!!!
I also like I've been trying very much. I can't stop loving you is also a lot better than the original version sang by Leo sayer ... Behind the lines is not in that list : also better than the original version bye ! |

Agreed, Phil's "I Can't Stop Loving You" is better than LS's but falls way short of the mark when compared with American Southern rock legends The Outlaws version. "Burn Down the Mission" is a good cover version but doesn't hold a candle to Elton John's original (which was perfect in it's original form). I feel that Phil's "You Can't Hurry Love" completely obliterates the original version by Diana Ross & The Supreme's. These are opinions and are meant in no way to incite "WWE Summerslam" of the Genesis News forum!!!

True Colours for me. To be honest, I have heard the originals of only a few songs in this list. True Colours - particularly in the acappella version - is my favourite.
The worst cover in my opinion (to help Vince along with the summer slam) is Somewhere. It is The Cover That Should Not Have Been Recorded.

Tomorrow Never Knows.. is one of my fave Phil cover songs....
My worst Phil cover song has to be You can't hurry love (sorry Jebs) and True colours (sorry Marty) but in my defence, i couldn't stand those original songs either, so hearing Phil sing them didn't alter my opinion....maybe i need to be more open minded who knows....maybe i'm indecisive....or am i???? ![]() ,

I can't decide if Visions is indecisive so I guess that would make me indecisive as well....have to agree about True Colours...never did like anything Cyndi Lauper did and Phil certainly did not do much to change my mind about that. You can't argue that Phil almost made a silk purse out of a sows ear with the a cappella arrangement on True Colours though....Beautiful layered vocals.
After I made my statement before I went back and listened to the Supremes version of YCHL and I actually favour it over Phils version in hindsight. I know that YCHL was ONE of the highlights for the crowd at the ACC in Toronto last tour...the whole crowd was on their feet dancing the night away...a great tune...sorry visions...Tomorrow Never Knows is well done and I really like Over The Rainbow snippet at the end of the album. So my top 3 would be (if the poll asked that) 1. You Can't Hurry Love 2. True Colours 3. Can't Stop Loving You.

i admit i answered this one without much thinking because i love "can't stop loving you". i didn't know this was a cover. after 15 minutes of googling, i came across leo sayer's name. maybe its my being partial to phil, but i prefer phil's version. i also downloaded keith urban's version.. off to listen to that one now!
