Absolutely! Acetates. The Beatles did one back in 1962 for "How Do You Do It". I wonder if what Jeff has is an Acetate disc, or an actual vinyl 7" pressing. Acetates are notoriously delicate; the quality diminishes when you play it, so best to play it once and record it. But if it's an actual single -- well, then, my question stands: Anything of interest on the B-side?

And, of course, it'd be great to hear the whole thing, but it looks like this depends on if Jeff finds a buyer, AND what the buyer intends to do with it.

Yeah, good question, Jeb; another distinction can be made between "Stock" copies, or "Promo" copies. In England, I am aware that "Promo" copies are also called "Demo" copies, for radio station airplay. Maybe that's what Jeff has...?

So, Jeff, is it an Acetate disc, or is it a Promo "Demo" vinyl 45? Or something else??!

You've gotten our attention!

aaaah, I've found that RC article on The Freehold again. It's an acetate.

Quote:
Though the single-sided acetate is in a pretty grim condition, it's just about possible to discern a slightly jangly, typical late-60s pop song, shrouded in a low-key arrangement and moody tempo that gives it something of the feel of the first Phil Collins solo single ITAT.
Just failed to make the connection between "demo record" and acetate... I'm very Arthur Dent-like today... "the word 'demo record' wandered through his mind in search of something to connect with..."

I don't really know. A friend of mine sent me a scan for translation because his English is not good enough. I think he gave it me sometime in 2008, and I also believe it was a recent issue then. Pages 77-80.

Cool, thanks, that's enough info for me to check it out (and I do have a few issues from last year) ...

I'm wondering if I totally missed the article (!) ... RC is my absolute favorite publication ever, those magazines are just FULL of cool stuff.

It was indeed a cheap acetate which i fortunately had mastered to CD before it degraded too much. I eventually sold the record to Phil however I have the only master copy.

By the way, the RC issue was #257, January 2001.

Hey folks,

the recording could actually be yours. Well, not the acetate, that was bought by one Mr C of Switzerland, but the only copy of the cleaned-up master from which the youtube snippet was taken:

Phil Collins First Ever Professional Recording on eBay, also Other Rock Memorabilia, Rock, Music Memorabilia, Music (end time 16-Jun-09 21:29:13 BST)

Jeff, if you're reading this, could you perhaps shed a bit of light on the musicians involved?

How long is the song? Is ist mono or stereo?
