I would personally have hated for Daryl to have tried to emulate Hackett note for note...Leave that to the cover bands...Daryl is a wicked guitarist in his own right and I think he should have been allowed to put his mark on the Genesis legacy as much as Phil did when he performed Suppers Ready for example....just as powerful as Gabriels but different in many many ways.

I agree with you Vince in everyway. I will say that my favroite INC medley was from the Mama Tour. Throw in In that Quiet Earth, what a great peice of music! On this years, Establish, and watch the documentary, where it shows Phil trying to drum the original Dukes Travels, that he couldn't anymore and the "flip out" afterwards. That is why he plays on the backbeat, and it was still amazing to here it played live after not playing it since 80'! Also, I call shenanegans on this whole thread past and present....!

Agree Dan...Phil said himself (I forget where but I read/heard it) before his last solo tour that 'you have to be in shape to play the drums' and like any athelete as you age some of the co-ordination and reflexes just go away. Otherwise you would never see an athelete retire. And that is why Phil can't do what he used to do...he is just getting a little older...but I will take his drumming on his music over any wannabee idiot savant imposter anyday. That would be describing someone who can name any Genesis tune from a one second sample. I wonder if the idiot savant is also "A very good driver".

Idiot Savant?
That suggests I'm only intelligent in regards to one specialist area. My pilot's license [...; moderator's edit] clearly contradicts this. "the beat goes on and I'm so wrong....." Last edited by martinus : 06-24-2008 at 08:56 PM. Reason: see deleted posts below |

Funny really, I always liked the fact that DS never tried to copy SH, even though I prefer SH's version (and tone for that matter). |

I have a thought. Genesis wrote it, Genesis can change it anytime they want. Whether you like it or not, I try to learn everyway it was played and play it that way when ever I feel it, and I am a much better drummer than Phil

And I am much taller than Phil and a better singer and dancer than Peter Gabriel Schmabriel!

Phew! Sorry it took so long to reply. I've just finished drumming through the entire back catalogue using only my penis. Yes, you can think of me as a bull$hitter if you like but I'm not going to offer a performance of this on 'you tube' because I couldn't find a big enough camera.
Who isn't? Going back to the ITC medley, I actually really liked the ITC part of the 07 medley. It sounded quite heavy and aggressive and very energetic (right after the raindrops bit). Although I suspect it's because Chester is such a great heavy, energetic drummer. Dear Phil, You are a great drummer. Stop poncing around with your train sets and do some intense practising you lazy sod. Then you might be in good physical shape to perform The Lamb when you all reunite. (That's what you get for fannying around with microphones for 30 years....Pigeon wrath.) |
