In The Cage reloaded

I was just wonderin' what you guys thought of the In the Cage medley Genesis did for this year.

Were you impressed or disappointed?

I was impressed and disappointed since they didn't do Old Medely like on the last tour.

But I do think that they had a better version since the Base was clearer than the older version.

So give me your thoughts

I loved it such as it is. I am not a big fan of medleys as a rule...but given the length of Genesis songs I guess they have to shorten them somehow. My gripe is that after 15 years they may have done a complete rethinking of the setlist instead of just repeating history. In hindsite a vote on the setlist by the fans would have been a really nice gesture if indeed this turns out to have been their last tour/last shows ever. They should have ripped a page out of Springsteens book and change it up every night while still sticking to the real crowd pleasing showstoppers. I got Thunder Road at my show and would like to have heard Jungleland but did not feel abused because he kept mixing the set list up night after night....this is the way all bands/artists should treat their fans....

My fave version is from 86. ITC - Quiet Earth - Suppers Ready.

My gripe is that I thought the drums were pitiful on the 07 version of Dukes Travels as the pattern appears to be somehow misplaced.

Well, if Phil decided to keep things simpler or do them differently it is not my place to complain. He wrote the drum pattern that way so he is free to do with it as he sees fit.
If we give Daryl Stuermer the freedom to do with the Firth Of Fifth guitar solo as he does then the changed drumming in In The Cage is covered by artistic license, too.

A fair point.

Does DS get a lot of stick for his interpretation of the FoF solo then?

Yes - from some.

Particularly with FoF there are two camps (and many people in between).
Camp one: The "order of the true solo", as it were, who are adamant that only Hackett ever played the FoF solo correctly, and all others who played it betrayed and distorted the original.
Camp two: The "advocates of artistic license", as it were, who think that since Daryl is not Steve it is okay if the way the solo is played reflects this change of musicians.

... and many people in between, I think.

There is middle ground. That's where I stand.

Steve did it perfectly and no one would be able to do it that well outside of him. Daryl, however, considering his different style of playing and such, I'd say he does a damn fine job in the place of Steve.

That's just me.

My p.o.v. exactly.

When I think of the first group ("it-which-must-not-be-changed") I always I hear Phil's words from the Genesis Songbook DVD:
"We do a little bit of this, a little bit of that - to other people it's Genesis, and Genesis has become this sacred cow that, you know, does what it does and mustn't do anything else."
