TotW [02/07 - 08/07/10]: GENESIS - Driving The Last Spike

Track of the Week - 02/07/2010 - 08/07/2010

GENESIS
- Driving The Last Spike

year: 1991
album: We Can't Dance [review]
working title: unknown
credits:
Banks/Collins/Rutherford
lyrics: yes
length: 10:08
musicians: Tony Banks, Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford
played live: 1992
mp3 downloads: amazonMP3 | iTunes
known cover version: none

notes: Driving The Last Spike is a rather unusual long song for Genesis. It tells a story about the building of the English railways based on historical documents. Unlike many other of Genesis' 10-minute songs Driving The Last Spike does not have an instrumental passage; it is rather like one long song made up of two similar songs.

I like the historical context of the song. About the railway navvies. Is it true that Phil got the idea for the song from a book about the Railway Navvies from the 19th century ?. I've given 13 points anyway.

There are help books if you are tracing your family history and you find that an ancestor was a railway navvy. I heard that Phil was reading one of those types of books when the idea came to mind. Great track.
