TotW [16/09/11 - 22/09/11]: PHIL COLLINS - The West Side

PHIL COLLINS - The West Side

year: 1982
album: Hello, I Must Be Going! [review]
working title: unknown
credits: Collins
lyrics: nein
length: 05.04
musicians: Phil Collins, Daryl Stuermer, Phoenix Horns, Mo Foster
played live: 1982/1983, 1985, 1990, 1994, 1995, 1996
known cover versions: none

notes: From the mid-70s onwards Collins indulged in fusion and jazz with Brand X. At the beginning of the 80s it had worn out, as Collins termed it. That did not stop him from making that kind of music though. The West Side is proof if proof were needed that Collins could always write a big pop songs but that he is first and foremost a brilliant musician. The 1990 live version is generally said to be the definitive version of this song, as it was recorded on the Serious Hits Live DVD.

The album version of The West Side is strong and groovy - but The West Side from the Serious Tour is just so superior to it. This is one song that really lifts my spirits. 15 points for it.

This was Phil's nod to Buddy Rich and albums like Swinging Big Band. He's always worn his musical inspirations on his sleeve and The West Side is yet another example of this. It's a showcase for the Phoenix Horns, specifically the late Don Myrick who crowns this song with a beautiful solo.
