VH1 Rock Honors--Observations and Opinions

Just got done watching the VH1 Rock Honors program. (btw SPOILER ALERT if you don't want to know what they played--don't read)

Just as I thought, they aired only 2 of the 3 Genesis songs that the band performed.

First of all, even though clearly Genesis when compared to Ozzy Osborne (remember being honored solo, not as Black Sabbath), ZZ Top and Heart, easily should have been the featured and top attraction, both in terms of longevity and historical influence, as well as sheer ability. Well, they weren't. The show opened with ZZ Top. The show closed with Ozzy, and it seemed like th big pyrotechnics were reserved for those bands. Heart and Genesis were sandwhiched in the middle (Genesis was the third band honored). I don't know if that's how they performed at the actual show, but it clearly put more of the emphasis on the first and last bands.

The English band Keane played That's All for the tribute part. That's about as lame and pedestrian a Genesis tune that could have been picked---probably done for simplicity and safety, but geez, absolutely no adventureousness with that pick. They at least could have played Follow You Follow Me, Misunderstanding or Mama. Playing That's All really didn't show off the Genesis catalog in the best possible light.

Robin Williams was his usual over the top self in introducing Genesis. You didn't really get any sense of history in his convoluted intro, other than Collins becoming the singer after Gabriel left. No mention of Steve Hackett, and I imagine if you were not a Genesis fan, you would have no idea who Banks and Rutherford were after the intro.

Genesis were introduced and launched right into Turn it On Again. Kind of strange to hear it as a 'first' tune. It sounded OK, sure wish the canned fake applause could have been toned down so we could have heard the music better. Does VH1 think we're all stupid? We don't need the fake crowd noise during the songs,

Phil's voice, imo, sounded definitely 'thinner' and less full than he did back on the last tour in 92. I guess that's no shocker, as that was 15 years ago, but it got me thinking---how is he going to sound 20 shows into the tour? How will he handle 3 nights singing in a row? I also wonder how fuller demanding songs will sound. I don't think he will have trouble with the softer ones, but I can see his voice strength being an issue as this goes on. I don't want to be a downer---its great to see them live---but you have to be concerned with voice strength over the long haul.

At the end of TIOA, Phil played the drums for a short bit of double drumming and the traditional TIOA ending without the damn medley, which is good. I guess I could see them opening with TIOA for the tour, although I still think they will save it as an encore.

They played No Son of Mine next. Decent, faithful rendition, but I have to question the choice here. You are at an awards show designed to play to a general audience. You are only playing a few songs. NSOM doesn't really rock the house. Its a little long and plodding. If it were me, I would have done Land of Confusion, a more powerful uptempo rocker, a good message song and a bigger hit to boot. In fact, I would have done Invisible Touch over No Son of Mine also---a better pop song that everybody would have recognized. When they panned the crowd during No Son, some people just looked a little bored (ie the Ozzy and ZZ fans).

And of course, that was it---no Los Endos broadcast. A real shame, because THAT is Genesis. But leave it to VH1, they probably didn't want to broadcast a 7 minute instrumental from 30 years ago that the average schmo would not recognize nor understand. So the best tune gets cut out by the dumbed down commercialized robots at VH1. Supposedly the unplayed tunes are on their website, so I will check that out now---I hope we can download it somehow. But man, Los Endos would have kicked tail.

Instead, the first glimpse the world sees of Genesis reunited is Keane playing That's All, and TIOA and No Son of Mine.

Lets hope as headliners at the Live Earth concert they have more adventuresomeness and more freedom to play stuff other than the obvious.

I thought it was a joke. I had it recorded on my DVR and just finished watching the Genesis portion. I couldn't believe Steve was not mentioned, it just seemed strange. When Gabriel was discussed it was just passed off as something that had "happened".

I just would have expected some more insight. Haha, guess mentioning that Phil wasn't an original member of the band would have been too confusing for people.

Man, they didn't even mention Ray Wilson.....how funny would it have been if they played 'Congo'?

Well, first of all, VH1 sucks. Like the poor bastard child of Mtv, they totally butchered all of the artists being honored because they only aired two hours of the show and each artist performed at least one more song. Genesis sounded great but they looked so uncomfortable there because they have always done whatever they wanted to and I think they excepted the “honor” just because it was good promotion for the reunion. Keane, who did the tribute song for Genesis killed the song That’s All. Every other tribute song played that night did the honored band justice, but when it got to the Genesis tribute, BOOM killed. Genesis and all of the other bands sounded great, but Vh1 just ruined the show just by producing it the way they did. Bam was awesome too, great host. I did think that Robin was funny.

Genesis on VH1 Classic

I'm a little latecomer here but here it is:

I agree it was a very poor choice of songs, specially NSOM, that was the worst. Turn it On is essentially a given as an opener, that's the name of the tour! But Keane's tribute was a total insult, they played with no emotion, total lack of creativity and bored the audience big time. Phil looks like he has run out of gas, maybe yes, it is too premature to criticize but he needs to get his energy level much higher than he did at this show. I'm guessing that they opted to save the surprises and grand effects for their own tour, and not to spill the beans in front of a mostly 80's Poppy crowd.

Robin was great, comparing Phil as a "Bob Hoskins lookalike" was hilarious and that Genesis like their fans used drugs in the 70's and still do only that the drugs are now Viagra and Lipitor!! LOL....

iwill say this. I was very happy that Robin Williams did the intro. I thought it was going to be over the top, and it was, but it was VERY funny.

Williams was OK, I realize its show business so they have to ham it up a little for the generic non Genesis fans who are watching, but some of the jokes were a little predictable and made it sound like Genesis were diehard druggies in the 70s, and of course they are one of the few rock bands that never had anyone with a drug problem in the group. I suppose compared to Ozzie and ZZ Top etc Genesis are probably boring so they had to come up with some schtick. I just thought if you were watching that as a casual Genesis fan, you probably really didn't learn anything substantive about the group and would be hardpressed to name Genesis members other than Gabriel and Collins.

Does anyone know how to capture the VH1 video stream of Los Endos onto the hard drive? I'm computer unsavvy when it comes to that kind of stuff.
