I Thought I Had The Extended Version Before And It Is The Same As The New Version

I must be an idiot because I have listened to both the Stereo and DTS mix of Genesis and it is fantastic.

DaO, do you have the supposed "real" extended version?

There's no need for me to defend him. I am certainly not "ascribing motivation to him" in any way. I mentioned what he said about that. That's all.

I do think, however, that there would be no point in creating a remaster that sounds exactly like the original.

I hope you did not buy the boxset if you do not like the stereo mixes and if you are not interested in the 5.1 mixes.

Nothing "supposed" about it. Lots of people have it as a 12-inch vinyl single or a 3-inch CD single. It just hasn't been remixed or remastered. If you have the new master, you have part of the long version, too; it just fades (rather abruptly) before reaching the 7:28 length of the singles.

I can only speak to the first box set, but I've heard the same moaning about the stereo mixes on that set....I personally think they are absolutely superb. I'll be buying the second sometime in the near future.

Ok I was just wondering, because I have the orginal extended version, and it seems to be exactly the same, that is why if there is another one....I want it Do you have this version??

I bought the boxes for a couple of reasons.

1. Because It is Genesis
2. I collect Genesis material
3. The stereo AND surround versions sound superior to previous versions.
4 The DTS and 5.1 mixes of the new boxes sounds amazing.

On the other hand, I like the stereo mixes from the 83-98 box set as much as the other formats because these albums were NEVER remastered. So all in all, if your a HUGE Genesis fan, there is a reason to own it.

I think martinus was directing his comment about why did you buy the box sets to downandout, not you Dan. DOA was saying how he didn't care about the 5.1 mixes and he obviously is not happy with the stereo remixes.

Exclamation Heads Up on the boxset

Best Buy is selling the North American version of the 83-98 box set, which is out today, for only $60, good today and tomorrow (Nov 20-21) ONLY!!!!

and apparantly, people are saying they are seeing Live Over Europe at Best Buy already, one week ahead of release schedule.

edit---Live Over Europe is indeed released in the US and I got it yesterday. It sounds fantastic, good deep bass and a much more prominent drum sound than the encore cds, so people will not be disappointed. Maybe this will spur some actual Genesis talk here, it has become kind of quiet lately.....

I agree with Down And Out in general

But to be fair to DOA, he never ever stated that he wanted anything to sound exactly like the originals - that would just be pointless. But we do expect the remixes to be at least as good - or in fact, much better than the originals.

And the remixes that I have heard (on the Turn It On Again Tour Edition CD) are exactly as DOA described - flat, harsh and messy due to over-zealous compression and EQing. It also sounds 'over-excited' (over-use of an Audio Exciter, a tool that adds brightness and harmonics to a track that is considered too dull). This may be a symptom of ageing, abused ears of rock musicians and producers assessing the mixes.

Compare these with the remixes on the original Turn It On Again CD. It's like night and day. And I can only put this down to the different styles of mastering used for each of the TIOA versions.

It is because of this awful mastering (and it was pretty bad on the 76-82 set also, IMO - I mean, who seriously can prefer the new squashed stereo mix of Abacab to the near-perfect Hugh Padgham version) that I have sadly declined to buy the 83-97 set.

Sorry if this p!sses off those that bought and love the set. It's just that I humbly disagree that the (stereo at least) mix is actually better (on the samples I have heard) than before.

Not what you say, tis HOW it is said. The way you said it came across better than someothers on here, Not talking about you DaO

This message is to all Genesis fans out there. If you have the USA Rhino Records release of the red box, or CAS. Play the DVD in your PC and just watch the EPK of the album without touching it....something extra pops up in the end!
