I think the best one from this set is Genesis but probably only because it was the one that desperatley needed the work!!!
WCD and CaS sound great in 5.1 but the overall tone is quite similar. The one thing that annoys me are the unneccesary extra bars at the end of Anything She Does. The original album edit was far better. |

The original album edit, was actually an edit of the original cut because it couldn't fit on the LP. Same with Mama, you'll notice it is longer!

Considering the length of ATOTT or SEBTP, I'm sure IT could have afforded an extra 30 seconds on the orginal LP had they intended for the the song to be longer.
It seems to me the edit occurred because it made the ending sound tidier and concise rather than aimlessly meandering. Mama is indeed slightly longer but not as long as the 'long version' on 12" single. Considering the new length of ASD and Mama (and the vocal change at the end of SILostU), it confused me as to why they also didn't include the extra verse of It's Gonna Get Better too. |

I like Calling All Stations best. I dare say that that is a surprise...
I am currently experiencing a bit of Collins-era-Genesis fatigue, but CAS is more than the easy way out. Truth be told, it is (I'm probably going to get lynched for this...) not because it is the strongest album of them all, but because it seems to be the least weak album for me. Genesis Plus: Mama, Home/Second Home. Minus: the rest. The second side of the album never did much for me, Illegal Alien may have been quite funny back then, but today it is like their one tasteless song. Invisible Touch. Plus: Domino, The Brazilian. Minus: In Too Deep, Throwing It All Away. If I had to rank all the albums in this box, IT would have come second. It is a very consistent album (as opposed to G'1983 which has one strong side and drivel on the other). Land Of Confusion, let's face it, will be better remembered for its video than for the music. We Can't Dance: Plus: No Son Of Mine, Fading Lights Minus: The stuff in between. I Can't Dance has not aged well, Spike seems like an attempt to revive balladesque story-telling à la One For The Vine, only this time it does not really work for me. A couple of less exciting songs plus a cheesy failed consolation song. Very Big Minus: The Bathroom Song. It hailed protests, I did not open my umbrella, and that was that. (K. Tucholsky) It has to be said, though, that most of the songs mentioned here are still far superior to what is being played in the charts.

You know you are getting old when you start making these types of statements...."When I was a boy!"

Well, considering that it has been stated in interviews that is why it was edited, I guess that is that. IGGB is actually a 12" mix, and the album version is much shorter. The relegnthening of ATSD and Mama are original album edits, not 12" mixes! Slightly different!

... computers really worked without crashing every so often, ... I met my friends in the street, at the local swimming pool or the football field, ... kids in school loved and hated their teachers and classmates instead of shooting them or selling them drugs, ... we had a total number of three tv stations and they would stop broadcasting between midnight and around 10am. ... the sun was, of course, warmer, the rain was wetter, there was more snow and it was whiter, summers were longer, ... musicians at that time could at least play the synthesizer instead of just pressing the wrong button on their computers ... the music played on the radio was just as bad, but, dammit, it was the soundtrack to my youth and it is therefore intrinsically glorious. So there.

IGGB is not a12" mix, it is the full length version. I doubt they went into a studio especially to record an extra verse and then strategically place it in the original mix?? |
