UK76’s TRAVELS: Herning and Hamburg
Saturday, June 16th, 2007 Sitting here at Hamburg Airport waiting for my flight to Zurich.
Last update was even before the Herning show. The concert was as great as Helsinki. A real festival atmosphere. We were let into the festival ground (with toilets & booths for food, drinks & merchandising) at 14.00 and immediately continued queueing at the entrance to the concert arena. Weather had turned out to be perfect. Not to hot, no real cloud in the sky! We had started initial queueing around 11.30 having a walk through the small but very nice city center.
At 17.00 they did the soundcheck which was great because we could not only hear but even SEE it from our spot! The only (nearly) full song they did was No Son Of Mine. After it was finished the crowd waiting at the gates cheered and clapped. Phil noticed that and said “Thanks very much… What else do you wanna hear?” Very nice! They opened the gates as planned at 18.00 and -again- I got a place in first row right in front of Mike. Very pleased!
The second tour show had some first minor mistakes. One of which was even visible before the show. The cargo netting (usually not used until Mama) did seem to operate properly. So it was up for the whole show. Phil had some lyrics probs on some songs. Nothing major apart from Ripples. He seemed to start with the wrong word or verse and they stopped and restarted the song. For the last 30-40 minutes we even had a light show! Despite the great weather it was very chilly throughout the show so Phil kept wearing his tracksuit jacket all night long.
After show I had a short drink with some friends and went to bed soon afterwards because the next morning we had to leave early for Hamburg. In the end we departed at 6.20 as we couldn’t have breakfast at that time. Despite passing some really heavy rainfall the drive to Hamburg went smooth and we were at the hotel at around 9.45. I returned the rental car and straightly headed for the stadium.
The entrance procedures turned out to be a mess!!! No-one really knew which of the 4 entrances (in each corner of the stadium) would definitely lead us to the field inside. In the end we lucked out and opted for the best one! After some more messy entrance stuff for which I won’t go into detail (I was really pissed off big time!) we ended up standing in about 6th row at the gate… when the rain set in! It lasted until the first couple of songs which means for about 2-3 hrs! Doors opened slightly delayed and we had to run down a lot of stairs and across the whole football pitch to get to the front. I don’t know how but I ended up in first row again (in front of Daryl).
The show was really awesome. The crowd was very good! 45,000 people going crazy, especially for the domino principle. Phil talked a lot of German, had some lyrics trouble again. But no-one really cared. After another great show (took a lot of excellent pics despite the weather) I went back to the hotel. I was soaking wet to the bone!
The set is still the same and in Hamburg I could see pretty much the full light show for the first time. Can’t wait for more large-scale stadium shows.
Currently I’m sitting at the Hamburg Airport as I said before waiting for the flight to Zurich which should depart in about 30 minutes. More from Bern (in case I find time to go online there).
