While the merchandise t-shirts were an odd size (they're fit and lean, these Czech girls), we finally settled down with cocktail to watch the boys perform. Banks' keyboard sound was wobbly to begin with but eventually settled down. Mike's new double neck guitar looked magnificent, although only a tall lad could handle such a beast. Phil looked - as they all did - old and wrinkly, the 'perfect face' bit in 'We can't dance' being very apt! There were a few mistakes/bad joins - especially 'Ripples' where Phil botched the intro, 'Domino' where Banks simply couldn't keep up/time with the bass keyboard motif (Rutherford muttered something rude!) and some lumpy tempo changes from Thompson, but to be honest, it was great to see them laugh at their mistakes - they're only human after all! Banks never smiles, so it's no point grumbling about that, but I just wished they'd looked happier being in Prague - especially if the programme notes are to be believed, i.e. that it's the love of playing live that matters. I think the set was very 'kind' to all fans and well paced, didn't favour their recent stuff too much, and therefore kept us old'uns happy. Without doubt, Collins is still the consumate performer, at ease with his own stage persona (I liked the almost rap-like vocalisations) and as a crowd pleaser (not sure the Czechs understood all his mannerisms though). Stage show must have looked good from a distance, whereas up close it looked 'bitty'. The fireworks at the end were a nice touch and the way the lighting rigs rose up the rails reminded me of the recent 'War of the worlds' martians film. How we ever all got on the metro to train it back home I'll never know!
