Genesis in conversation with it: Another Cup of…

Before the show in Hannover yesterday, we had the chance to meet the Genesis-veterans Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks for an interview. They talked about the tour and possible setlist variations, the upcoming boxsets and future plans. Also, Mike demonstrated his artistic skills…
The interview will be online in a few days.

Please…tell me you asked to them the “Rumours about Feb 08 in Southamerica!”

If they drop Hold On My Heart, please don’t replace it with That’s All or Misunderstanding. I hope you told the men that we want setlist changes that favour of the old songs ! Dance On A Volcano, Lamb/Musical Box and Supper’s Ready (Apocalypse/As Sure As Eggs Is Eggs) must be included, and Hold On My Heart, Domino and I Can’t Dance must be dropped. Also, Ripples and Carpet Crawlers must stay for the NA leg. Thanks

And for Soledad: It’s more interesting to play the “new” songs than the old ones. I think this is a very good setlist, that mix great songs from the whole career.
I’m not a progressive guy, neither a poppy kid. I’m a Genesis lover! Both eras are fucking amazing.

Gentlemen, (Genesis)
We acknowledge your work in late 80’s and early 90’s. In fact we appreciate your contribution in your own special way to these decades. We have not been together since 15 years! There is nothing wrong with giving back to the fans, I mean the real fans, the ones that cannot go to sleep on a given night without talking or thinking about you. We wish to hear more songs from Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering. Whats wrong with Blood on the roof tops? What about The Eleventh Earl of Mar? Just try to imagine what effect this can have for fans when playing to the masses in these huge stadiums. We have been waiting 15 years for you!
Nonetheless, we remain faithful to you, no matter what you play.
We love you.

My main worry — which is why I still haven’t bought tickets for any of the US shows yet — is that on the US leg of the tour they’ll choose to drop some of the older songs, like “Carpet Crawlers” and “Ripples,” in favor of pop songs like “Illegal Alien” or “In Too Deep,” on the grounds that American fans prefer the hits. I hope they keep the setlist the same. I’d like to see this tour but as a fan of classic Genesis I’ll consider it a ripoff if they only concentrate on their 80’s stuff.

I sincerely hope that there will be setlist changes along the way. Not much of a good marketing idea for the live CDs if every show sounds the same including Phils chatter. I would love to hear Deep in the Motherlode, Back in NYC, the Lamb, The Knife, or another cut from WW or TOTT. Please get rid of I Can’t Dance (very silly to witness live), Hold On My Heart and No Son of Mine.

All they need to do is replace the 10 minute Domino with the 10 minute One For The Vine. It’s that easy!
