Genesis at Twickenham

No changes tonight, when Genesis performed their set “at home” in London:

Behind The Lines / Duke’s End
Turn It On Again
No Son Of Mine
Land Of Confusion
In The Cage / The Cinema Show / Duke’s Travels
Afterglow
Hold On My Heart
Home By The Sea / Second Home By The Sea
Follow You Follow Me
Firth Of Fifth / I Know What I Like
Mama
Ripples
Throwing It All Away
Domino
Drum Duet
Los Endos
Tonight Tonight Tonight
Invisible Touch

I Can’t Dance
The Carpet Crawlers

First impressions from the concert attendants: The show was brilliant, the band in a good mood and the audience awesome.

Indeed, the show was great. The setlist, the music, the rain, everything perfect!

I agree! Fantastic gig and a fantastic venue. Sound quality was the best I’ve heard for a stadium gig. The band played so well and so powerfully. A highlight for me was “I Know What I Like”, with a mass singalong. Great to see Phil playing the drums so much.

A fantastic show. My first Genesis concert, and I was not disappointed (I’m a huge fan, but was only 14 back when they toured in ‘92, and couldn’t afford to see them). I have to say the crowd was really energetic toward the end, but it took them a while to get there (although I suppose it would depend on where you were located in the stadium, as those on the floor were on their feet and into it from the start). Pardon me for saying so, but maybe my perspective is somewhat different being a bit younger than the average patron; upon getting up to dance to “Follow you, follow me”, my wife and I were immediately given grief by the folks behind us. Our entire area seemingly immovable (or perhaps asleep), we ventured off mid-way through the show, and eventually found some hardcore fans who happened to be as inebriated as us. Happily I was able to sing along to each remaining song, starting with “Ripples”, without having to worry if I was offending anyone. As far as the setlist, I suppose I was hoping against hope that they would switch things up a bit for their “home” show in London - perhaps throw in “The Knife” or “One for the Vine”. But although the setlist remained the same, it is undeniably a great set of songs. Particular highlights for me were “Afterglow”, “FoF / IKwiL”, “Ripples”, and pretty much everything from the “Drum Duet” onward. All in all a very satisfying show. I never thought I’d get the chance to see them tour; I’m certainly glad they decided to reunite after all these years.

Fantastic show. In the Cage medley, Los Endos were awsome. Ripples, I Know What I Like and Carpet Crawlers had very different but genuine emotions. Like most people, I would have loved to have seen more old stuff but Home by the Sea, Domino and even Invisible Touch were really powerful. I just hope it’s not the last chance we get to see them.

This gig was my 37th anniversary of seeing Genesis perform in concert. My first live gig was at the Lyceum London free lunch time show in December 1970 with Anthony Phillips on Guitar!
Over the years the price of addmision went up from 30p at the Red Lion Leytonstone 1971, 40p at the Wake Arms Epping 1972, 60p at the Rainbow Theatre 1973, 75p at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane 1974 and the Empire Pool Wembley 1975 £1.50p. Last night with booking fee the price was £75!!!!!
It was a smoke free concert (thank god) but when will it be a drink free concert? Every 5 minutes people running to get yet another beer please get a life for 2 1/2 hours when the gig is on ,you can go to the pub 24/7 but Genesis will only play one show every 15 years.

Excellent show. Sound at the beginning not as good as in Linz (too much bass and echo). Agree with previous commentator on the drinking. So much movement up and down between food and drink fetching that it felt a bit like watching an American football match. BUT - took my three daughters and they really enjoyed the show. That made it for me.

Getting out of the bloody car park a nightmare. Probably won’t go to Rome even though the Italian audiences are fantastic. Would however recommend this spectacular to anyone.

  7. Stu Haggar Says:

Twickenham was absolutely awesome!!!! The band were on fire and the crowd were really up for it. The set was a great mix of old and new. I am not ashamed to admit Ripples made me cry.
The light show kept up the tradition of Genesis always setting new highs.
I hope the lads feel the need to do it all again soon.
Next stop “Blickling Hall Norfolk to see Peter Gabriel, can we all pray for a full reunion next year with a tour.
    I live in hope?

It was the same story in Manchester with these idiots running out for booze every 5 mins.
I was getting irritated having to move from my seat everytime. Why spend all that money on tickets, then miss half the show whilst getting tanked up? I saw a few scuffles in the aisles, with a few tossers being chucked out by security. I agree with Gary, it’s not everyday you get to see Genesis, you can go boozing anytime. Apart from that, great gig, visuals, lightshow and weather!
    Hopefully, they’ll be back!

  9. Gary Says:

Can anyone remember the name of the site where the concert music could be downloaded as an official bootleg?

Gary, “Can anyone remember the name of the site where the concert music could be downloaded as an official bootleg?”…… www.themusic.com . $30+post . no downloads here though

Gary re prices - we have had just a tad of inflation since 1970s but to be creative the best deal had to be in Prague (albeit transferred from Budapest) £25 for great seat and view, relaxed crowd cheap beers enjoyed sensibly by all and a fabulous show, small stadium specially built also sat in the dry at circa 30 degrees. Add in a short city break of 2 days keeps me happy for a few weeks and compares well to 45p for Solihull Civic Hall in 1973 !

  12. Alison Says:

What a FANTASTIC time was had by all on Sunday night…….who cared about a bit of rain.. I loved the songs and my favourite albums ‘and then there were three’, ‘wind and wuthering’ and ‘trick of the tail’ were covered.

How great to be part of a once in a lifetime experience……

I heard that they may do some more gigs in the uk after they do America, we hope so. Can’t wait until the DVD comes out from Sunday.

  13. Gary Says:

Please dont get me wrong re prices for the concert my pre sale ticket in block A3 row 9 was spot on for sight and sound and was good value even at £75, but the last small size gigs back in 1982 at the Marquee club, 3 nights at the Hammersmith Odeon + the re-union show at Milton keynes cost less then this one concert including transport!
One hour of this show will be on Radio 2 this Saturday night at 8 p.m.

  14. Paul Says:

I was worried when I got the tour CD that we would have a load of pop tracks - but once they got into the In The Cage medley I knew it would be great. The best 50th birthday pressie my kids could have got me. What a night!!!!!!!

  15. paul (hull) Says:

    i fully agree with declan
i was in manchester and some of the tossas that are up and down allthe time to get booze and then to go to the toilet all night really pisses me right off
great show from the boys and just about all the songs were brill
