Genesis: Concert + Setlist in Pittsburgh (Sept 09th, 2007)
Our little hockey-rink here in Pittsburgh, Mellon Arena, is significantly smaller and more intimate than the soccer stadiums I had become familiar with in Europe. As you can imagine, the stage and set-design were reduced to size. Nevertheless, the back-screen and two side-screens were big, bright, and beautiful.
I suppose the smaller venue worked out to my advantage. Sitting 15 rows from the stage, my buddy and I were much closer than I thought we’d be. (My buddy, by the way, is a guy who only passively knew about Genesis – but is now, in his own words, “hooked.” Add one more to the world-wide fan-base!) Very little space between the end of the stage and the first row. And let me tell you, the visuals, the music, the band itself, everything was fantastic.

I didn’t attend any of the other shows, so I guess I’m not in a position to compare, but everything sounded tight, well-rehearsed, and full of energy.
The intro to the old medley was pretty cute. You know: “Anybody old here? Do we have any old-folks in the crowd? Ah yes…you!…yes, you’re old. Any gray hair out there?” Etc. etc. And the medley itself, like all of their medleys, invited goose-bumps and a tingly feeling down the back. Incredible! The visuals during “In the Cage,” a digitized man running behind red bars, was equally cool and creepy, and the sound of “Duke’s Travels” towards the end – followed by “Afterglow,” was probably one of the most intense parts of the set for me. Everyone in the arena singing every word, unable to stand still, the hairs on our arms standing upright.
Finally, as you can imagine, Ripples and Carpet Crawlers were very warmly welcomed, and they nailed ‘em both!
Other than minor technical difficulties with Tony’s keyboard during his intro to the Second Home by the Sea (which was quickly resolved), the show was flawless.

Thanks for coming to Pittsburgh, I live here, and this is the sixth time that I’ve seen the band. Third in that arena.
The show was great, but I thought that Banks’ keyboards were a little low in the mix. There were times where it was a little difficult to hear his parts, especially on Second Home by the Sea. They seemed to be pushing for a more guitar/bass sound.
There were so many things to like about the show, but I really enjoyed the Drum Duet/Los Endos. Firth of Fifth was excellent as well.
I thought that the band clicked pretty well. Phil was engaging the crowd and can move pretty good for an old guy. Mike was pretty animated toward the end of th show, really getting into the last few songs before the encore. Tony was solid and took the false start on Home by the Sea in stride. Daryl and Chester were solid and still fit in great with the band.
I’m looking forward to seeing them again in Cleveland at the end of the month.

Phil mentioned at the beginning of the show where we could go online to purchase a copy of last nights show. Anyone know what he said? I would like to buy it.

The Genesis concert in Toronto on Friday Sept 7 was amazing! Terrific for long-time fans like my hubby & I. Even more great was to hear Real Music again! It was excellent to see and hear the original good-bump-givers like Carpet Crawlers, Ripples, I know What I Like, and In The Cage. But I had a rude awakening jolting me back to the present day in Toronto. I asked for a proper escort from one of the “ushers” on the floor, to take me down to the front of the stage. I had a dozen long-stemmed red roses with a card for the band/Phil. I know the rules; give the flowers to who can get them to the head security guy, or PR guy, who eventually gets them to the band. Not a big deal. Take the flowers from me, give them to someone who can pass them along to the band! Guess that only happened in the “good ‘ole days” because I was stopped abruptly by 6 burly security guys, all angry at my being there. Some shot obscenities at me, put their hands on me to push me away, and rudely told me to “get back to my seat”, “what do you think you’re doing”, and “Get lost, @#$% go back to your seat”, “get the X#$% outta here”. I was stunned! In all my concert-going years, this never happened before. The over-the-top, rude, uptight behaviour of these fellows tarnished an otherwise terrific anniversary show. Wonder if the roses ever made it to Phil or the band? Sadly, I doubt it.
