Genesis: “When In Rome” - DVD release postponed

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

While the Live Double CD Set Live Over Europe will be released on 23rd November (Germany) / 26th November (Europe) / 27th November (North America) in two formats (Digpak Special Edition / Jewel-Case Standart Version), the new and highly anticipated Live Double-DVD When In Rome has been put back until February or later.
The reason is - obviously - the large amount of special features and the time schedule for all the work that needs to be done for such a project. When In Rome will be released on blu-ray and HD-DVD formats also. More news on that when we have it!

The Double CD Live Over Europe is now available for pre-order:

Genesis Post Tour Blues (I): 3147 - Just A Number?

Friday, October 19th, 2007

In many ways, the Genesis Tour 2007 was different. We recently had the Growing Up Live World Tour (Peter Gabriel) and the First Final Farewell World Tour (Phil Collins), both of them very well documentated with both reviews and photos. But this was all nothing compared to Turn It On Again 2007. We started this blog to keep you informed and to give people outside our website staff the chance to write reviews, post commenty etc. The result was astonishing.
Apart from blog entries and comments (also in our forums), we also wanted to have “some” nice photos on our site. Five month later, we have photos from EVERY show of the tour online, including some soundchecks and dress rehearsals. 3147 may just be a number, but it is also YOUR number. Without your contribution(s), this all would not have been possible.
We thank all of you for sending in tons of photos, many of which we simply couldn’t use, either because we had better options or because we simply received too much. Roughly 15,000 photos were sent in and we used 3147 of them for or gallery.

These are all contributors, sorted alphabetically:
Pablo Aguirre, Selam Anapay, Chris Ainsworth, Magnus Arnason, Kevin B., Kevin Barrie, Jeff Bending, Zach Bernard, Detlef Boeing, Bryan Bretsche, Jos Conter, Darrin Crawford, Bryan Daniels, Sylvain Diciare, Kristina Dion, Lothar Dobras, Okan Dogu, Chris Drake, Christian Eisbrenner, Christian Emge, Ralf Faissner, Matthias Fengler, Patrick Frei, Jörg Gattermann, Christian Gerhardts, Manfred Harries, Torsten Heier, Helmut Janisch, Jerome, John, Jeff Jones, Keegs, Ozan Keskin, Andreas Kirchhammer, F. Genesis: When In Rome (2DVD) and Live Over Europe (2CD)

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

With the box set 1983-1998 only just published, the next releases are already getting ready.

1) 2DVD - When in Rome
The live DVD version of the tour will be released as a double DVD set. The concert film consists of the complete Rome concert. Some audio parts have been overdubbed with recordings from other shows (in Düsseldorf and Lyon) because Genesis fumbled two or three moments in Rom - as you will be able to hear on the Rome Encore 2CD. The set will also contain many extras beside the main concert. It is certain that a backstage / behind the scenes feature will be included, but the content is not yet known in detail.
When In Rome will come out as a 2DVD, 2 blu-ray disc and double HD-DVD sets. The release date for Germany is currently set for November 16 and November 19 for other countries. These dates, however, are subject to change because work on the extras has not yet finished. We will of course keep you up to date through our newsletter and blog…

2) double CD of the 2007 tour: Live Over Europe
There will definitely be a live double album of the 2007 tour which will be called Live Over Europe. Unlike the Encore series this set will be reworked to have a crystal clear sound. The tracklist consists of the complete live show, but it will be compiled from several shows. Most of Phil’s talk in between the songs will be cut out. Read this list to find out which song was taken from which concert:

Behind The Lines / Duke’s End > HANNOVER 23.6.
Turn It On Again > AMSTERDAM 1.7.
No Son Of Mine > AMSTERDAM 1.7.
Land Of Confusion > BERN 17.6.

Genesis: (Official) Live material from the 2007 tour

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

Since a lot of you keep asking us about releases from this tour, here is a list of what’s available. This was originally compiled by Steffen Gerlach.

CDs from the Encore Series
The official 2CD recordings of all European concerts are not available in regular record shops, but can only be obtained from the American company www.themusic.com. These recordings are a mixture of the soundboard sound and open microphones in the field of the night’s show. They were not modified by Nick Davis. Their quality cannot compare with regular live records.
The North American Encore Series was confirmed just before the dress rehearsal in Toronto (5th September). The Series includes 22 shows from North America (New York City and both Hollywood Bowl Shows are NOT part of this series!)

Live CD
An official 2CD live album will become available in autumn. It will consist of all all the songs that were performed live minus Collins’ introductions, however. The recordings for this will receive post-production by Nick Davis. The music on this release will be compiled from the best takes of all the European shows.

Live DVD
A double DVD set featuring the complete show in Rome (July 14) in a 5.1 mix will also be released in autumn. There will also be a HD version. The bonus material will consist of some backstage impressions from the European tour.

Tour DVD
The Premium members of the official Genesis website (annual fee US$ 35) will receive a DVD with a tour documentary probably early in 2008. This DVD will not be available in record stores. It will contain video material that was not used for the bonus features of the Live DVD.

Backstage clips
The video clips offered in the media / virtual ticket area of the band’s official website may be a teaser for the tour documentary DVD. Premium Members (annual fee US$35) and Virtual Ticket members (for free) are able to access these clips. Further clips will be added until the end of the North American tour (currently available: clips from Herning, Hamburg, Berne and the dress rehearsal in Brussels). Further backstage clips from Paris and Amsterdam have been published at www.telecomcerto.it. These are available for everyone; they were part of an Italian MTV tv special (>torrent* at the Genesis Movement website<).

More live stuff

May 12 - Las Vegas / “Rock Honors“
The first official reunion performance in Las Vegas was broadcast on XX.XX by American tv station VH-1. The band performed Turn It On Again, No Son Of Mine and Drum Duet / Los Endos. The latter piece was only available as a stream from the VH-1 website. Several DVD recordings of this are available as >torrents*<.

June 26 – Düsseldorf / VUE test broadcast
The first concert in Düsseldorf was broadcast via satellite as a test run for the live broadcast to cinemas in England, Spain and Sweden the day after. Satellite TV experts could capture both audio and video of the test broadcast that was not intended for the public, and some of them did. No recordings of this have surfaced yet.

June 27 – Düsseldorf / VUE broadcast
Like the test run, the actual live broadcast could be captured live because the transmission was unencoded. The data stream consisted of the complete concert plus a brief interview special in HD quality and a live 5.1 mix by Nick Davis including a couple of hiccups in the transmission. Several versions of this became available in fans’ cirles on DVD both in HD/5.1 as well as in standard 2.0 sound format. Genesis management very soon after forbade further trade and spread of these DVDs.

June 30 – Paris / RFM Broadcast
French radio station RFM broadcasts the first part of the show from the Parc des Princes. The broadcast included the intro, Behind The Lines (instrumental) / Duke’s End and Turn It On Again. Various CD versions of this are available as >torrents*<.

July 07 – London / Live Earth
Genesis’ performace at this worldwide mega-event at Wembley Stadium London was broadcast by many tv stations either live or as a recording, though not always completely. The band performed Behind The Lines (instr.) / Duke’s End, Turn It On Again, Land Of Confusion and Invisible Touch. The sound was mixed by Nick Davis. Gemischt wurde hier wieder von Nick Davis. Various DVD versions of this are available as >torrents*<.

July 08 London / BBC Special

Several songs from the gig at Twickenham stadium were mixed by Nick Davis after the show and broadcast as a one-hour special on XX.XX by British radio station BBC2. A ninety-minute version is to follow in autumn 2007. The 60-minute special consisted of Behind The Lines (instr.)/Duke’s End, Turn It On Again, No Son Of Mine, Land Of Confusion, Home By The Sea/Second Home By The Sea, I Know What I Like, Mama, Los Endos and Tonight, Tonight, Tonight/Invisible Touch. The longer version is to also include the In The Cage medley and Domino. Various CD versions of this are available as >torrents*<.

July 14 – Rome / Telecomcerto/RAI Special
The final show of the European tour in Rome, where Genesis played to an audience of half a million, will soon be published on DVD, but part of it (60 minutes) will also be broadcast by Italian TV station RAI2. The compilation is to include Turn It On Again, No Son Of Mine, Land Of Confusion, Home By The Sea/Second Home By The Sea, I Know What I Like, Follow You Follow Me, Mama, Drum Duet/Los Endos and Tonight, Tonight, Tonight/Invisible Touch. Nick Davis has mixed the sound after the show. DVD recordings of the TV broadcast are likely to appear as Torrents.

September 05 – Toronto / Dress Rehearsal Live Stream
As a special for all premium members (annual fee of US$35) and Virtual Ticket members (for free) of the official Genesis website there will be a live stream of the first part of the dress rehearsal in Toronto. Backstage impressions featuring, among others, Nick Davis set the mood for it.

*Torrents are currently the most widely used means of exchanging uncompressed audio/video data via the internet. Genesis management tolerate these torrents, provided the material in question has not been officially released by Genesis. The links provided on this page lead directly to the best versions of the corresponding recordings at torrent.genesis-movement.org, the best address for torrents of Genesis and related. Genesis: Chapter & Verse

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

CoverFrom songwriters to friends

A new book about Genesis has been published in early September. The 360 pages between a blue hardcover is entitled Genesis - Chapter & Verse by Tony Banks, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Steve Hackett and Mike Rutherford. It has the size of a coffeetable book which really brings out the quality of the numerous photos…

After the introduction by editor Philip Dodd the (former) members of Genesis take the word. They tell the story of the band in chronological order from their school days (where Anthony Phillips talks about how Genesis was kept alive for future generations in 1969 in his unmistakable way) to the start of the Turn It On Again tour 2007. One focus is on the genesis and development of certain songs. Tony Banks in particular excels with interesting, frequently self-ironic comments. His explanations are interrupted by contributions from important companions such as Chester Thompson, Daryl Stuermer, Richard Macphail, the former drummers, manager Tony Smith and producers Hugh Padgham and Nick Davis. All this is illustrated with photos that tell their own stories and lightened by humourous anecdotes, e.g. about the time when a naked roadie stood in place of the Rael dummy during the Lamb tour.

This book is for everyone who wants to understand and appreciates the magic of Genesis. Older fans, who have followed the band from their early days, will certainly be reminded of their own past, for the this book gives an impression of the time in the stories it tells, the anecdotes and asides (e.g. Phil Collins’ about the music scene); younger fans may find it hard to imagine those times, though.

innenIf you are looking for a comprehensive biography of Genesis you are completely on the wrong track here. This book is about the emotional, musical development of the band as seen by its individual (former) members and the people around them. The threads of the uncensored interviews about the band’s past that were conducted with each person on their own (in different places, too) are woven into the history of Genesis and provide a glimpse at the personalities, characters and their emotional situations.

An entertaining book and fun to read. In the end one wonders: Why did it end so soon?

Genesis: North American Encore Series confirmed

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

Encore SeriesDuring the interview section of today’s webcast - from the dress rehearsal in Toronto’s Air Canada Center, the Encore Series for North America was confirmed. For a while it was unsure whether or not they would be able to do an Encore Series (see our interview with Genesis, conducted in June this year), so this is really good news for all fans.
The Encore Series is provided by US company themusic.com (located in Los Angeles) and means that each of the 25 North American Genesis-Shows will be available on silver-pressed official live 2CD-Sets! The European leg of the tour is already available on 2CD for $30 each. The London show is sold out at the moment, but will be available again by mid-October!

Daryl and MikeTwo new interesting interviews are now available online on innerviews.com. Anil Parsad has interviewed Mike Rutherford and Daryl Stuermer, who will kick off the North American leg of the Genesis Turn It On Again-tour today! Genesis: Anatomy Of A Tour - Book Review

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

Ever wondered what the North America indoor stage looks like? Well, this is it:

stage

This photo shows the pop-up stage design (indoor shows) that you can see in the Anatomy Of A Tour Book/DVD Set, that is now available. As you can see, the screen is not as big and there are also some elements of the light show a bit different.
