UK76’s TRAVELS: The Cinema Show

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

UK76s Travels After a few days of absence due to another couple of concerts I can finally continue my diary. My “home matches” in Düsseldorf are over now and what can I say?

I have seen two completely different shows! It all started with another long day of queueing for the first show. Arrived at the stadium at 9.30 with 6.5 hrs of queueing ahead. A big THANK YOU to the security company who was in charge of the Düsseldorf shows. The first day was the easiest and most unexcited entry procedure I’ve ever experienced especially in a venue of that size (about 50,000 people in attendance!). Got a spot in front row right between Phil & Tony. After a couple of light showers while waiting outside it was a treat to finally see an indoor show without any chance of rain.

The show itself was very good as usual. The most impressive thing was the light show and videos which I could finally watch in full glory for the first time on the tour. The only but unfortunately quite noticeable downside was the extremely lame audience. Reminded me a bit of the scandinavian shows. After seeing 2 very good Phil Collins solo shows (one of which the was best I’ve ever seen!) at the same venue in November 2005 I have highly disappointed that the audience couldn’t pick up the same energy as 1 1/2 years ago. However, all the people I talked to after the show who hadn’t seen a concert yet were still pretty impressed.

The second night - “The Cinema Show” - was to become way better!

After merely 6 hrs of sleep we started queueing again at 9.45am. Slightly different entry procedure but still no problem to get to the front. I was hoping that this show would be different from last night (in a positive way of course) especially with the cinema broadcasting to Ireland, the United Kingdom, Spain and Sweden. To cut a long story short, the show shouldn’t let me down! I stood pretty much at the same spot as the day before. I can’t really tell what it was but the whole show was way more powerful, the audience really delivered and still there were no major mistakes. The video screens failed during most of In The Cage but the song itself has never been that powerful on this tour before! Afterglow is one of my all-time favourite songs and I had waited for a goosebumps moment during that song on every show I had seen so far. Last night it finally came! As I said before it’s hard to answer why it happened but the whole performance had so much energy - almost magic! Everything went smooth, no lyric problems. Phil was interacting more than ever before. And it was nice to see that he even included the cinema viewers on the Domino principle! I already heard that I was on the cinema screens quite a few times throughout the show and that it was obvious that I was enjoying myself. I’m glad it did cos that’s just the way it was! Along with the great show it was nice to meet so many nice people, a lot of which I had never met before.

I think the band was impressed by the show and the audience as well. Cos they showed their appreciation more than on any other show I’ve seen so far. At times they looked really impressed!

Oh, how I hope someone recorded the cinema broadcasting signal…

Somehow I’m glad I skip Stuttgart now and have 2 days off because at the moment it feels like it doesn’t get much better. On Friday I take the evening flight to Paris and hopefully see a show on Saturday that can compete with the 2nd night in Düsseldorf.

Genesis ready to go after Brussels rehearsals

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

Several photos from the Brussels dress rehearsal have already appeared on the internet and although we still do not want to spoil too much, we have a couple of great close-ups for you (more will follow soon in a huge photo-gallery, including images from the stage show)

It was a strange situation - 250 invited people in this old EXPO hall 5, the stage was built crosswise (otherwise it would not have fitted in), waiting for the first real Genesis live-show in 2007. It was only 2pm when the band came on stage to perform a strong Behind The Lines / Duke’s End intro. What followed was a carreer spanning set, covering all albums from 1973-1991 except for Abacab. We don’t want to reveal too much from the stage show (also because we have been asked not to), but we can say this: Genesis 2007 are bigger and more impressive than ever before. The show was nearly perfect from a technical point of view. Phil missed some vocals here and then, but that’s something you will always hear during live-shows. Phil also played a lot of drums, during Follow You Follow Me he drums and sings simultaneously. Ripples and In The Cage don’t seem to be a problem for his voice and even Mama was performed convincingly, although you could hear that they have altered the vocals a bit to lower the risk for Phil’s voice - but it does not affect the quality of the songs in a bad way!
The start of the show is a symbiosis of the instrumental sections of Behind The Lines and Duke’s End. Ripples is nearly complete, which includes a great guitar solo by Daryl Stuermer. Follow You Follow Me was, other than rumours reported before, performed in its entirety and wasn’t really part of a medley - Chester played percussions, while Phil was drumming and singing. Firth Of Fifth was only the instrumental part (like in 1998), Duke’s Travels was played as part of the In The Cage Medley, but wasn’t complete either. The second and last encore The Carpet Crawlers began - as we are used to in the Collins-era - without the first verse with the line “the crawlers cover the floor”…
It was interesting to see that Mike used his new double neck guitar frequently. Find below some close-up shots we took at the dress rehearsal. More photos will follow towards the Helsinki show.
All guests could agree on one thing: Genesis are fit for the tour and ready to go - Turn It On Again!

Genesis: Photos from Las Vegas

Monday, May 14th, 2007

…or the return of the double-neck guitar. In our it.interview with Daryl Stuermer, the return of the double-neck guitar was revealed. Mike hasn’t played that since the Mama-Tour 1983/84. Now, here’s a photo of Mike, playing the new double-neck during Los Endos. Also, we see Phil in a new outfit and shaved. Both photos were taken by Kat - click on them to see tham at a higher resolution. More photos are available in the official Genesis Forum.
