Post Tour Blues III: Wished-for set lists

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

Genesis mainly went on a stadium tour because a certain Mr Peter Gabriel could not find the time to join his old mates. Strangely enough, Peter Gabriel spontaneously announced that he would be touring himself. For the fans this meant logistical problems, and a couple of Gabriel concerts took place the very same day Genesis played in another city. Genesis offered their hard-core and casual fans a lively cross-section from their long career, while Peter asked his fans - once again - what they wanted to hear. Nobody took that seriously. He had asked the same thing for his previous tour, after all, and in the end only In Your Eyes and Secret World made it from the top ten most wanted list into the set. He would have probably played them anyway.
It was a big surprise therefore when Peter proved in Gelsenkirchen on June 14 that he was serious about it and announced he would play “your wish list exactly”. The early shows in particularly turned into a giant feast for the fans. Intruder, DIY, I Have The Touch, Big Time, Lay Your Hands On Me, On The Air, Indigo, Humdrum, Moribund The Burgermeister or No Self Control - who would have thought? Almost 90 minutes of the first show has passed before the first big hit, Big Time was played, and only in the encores did Peter play a song he had played on the previous tour. In later concerts Peter became less adventurous about the set list, but the tour was a big sensation nevertheless.
The question remains: What did Peter intend with this tour? It did look a bit as if he wanted to get one over on them, like, I play what the fans want, you have your stadium set list - let’s see what they like better. The funny thing about that is: Genesis also played what their fans wanted. Just compare the actual setlist with the set list survey in the it forum (link currently points at the German survey because I cannot find the international one :-/; translator)

Post Tour Blues II: The Return Of The Singing Drummer

Monday, November 12th, 2007

It cannot have been four months already, can it? But it has. The return of Genesis in a summer that was terrible weather-wise in Europe is already that far in the past. Now that we had some time to digest it, let us take an utterly subjective look at the past tour. It can, of course, only be one of many different views, and your mileage may vary.

We expected everything and nothing. Truth be told, we did not expect too much. Many things indicated that the tour might be a mediocre experience at best. The musicians are too old, they are in it just for the money, big stadium shows, a special effects bombardement, very, uh, average performances of individual band members in recent years - and nobody really knew where this band was at in 2007.

This tour was a must for many younger fans, and it was among them that optimism was strongest. After all, it would be the first time that they would see their heroes. For other fans it was an opportunity to show their children the band they used to revere and (some secretly) still do. These older fans were more anxious about disappointments. The spring of 2007 was marked by set list debates, questions whether “Mike still got what it takes” and insinuations that “they only do it for the money”.
It it splendidly peculiar: No other band is put down so furiously in fan fora before a tour like Genesis: They have to play everything up to Wind & Wuthering, bloody well nothing from the Gabriel era, what about Calling All Stations, oh bung that phase, no, not at all, and all in the all the 80s were a load of dung and the 70s so terribly cramped. This band has worn out three singers, two guitarists and who knows how many drummers.

And then Genesis return. Oh yes, but which Genesis? Is this Genesis? Well of course this is Genesis! Why return? Tony Banks sums it up: “We want to show people what Genesis really is about”, they want to “play a cross-section”, though they were neither going to go back before 1973 nor beyond 1992.
Once again the fans debate, argue and discuss - as if the band would play prog music to a stadium audience, and they haven’t got it anymore anyway, but whatever, as long as they play the hits, oh please don’t….
Then June 04 arrived. Genesis played their dress rehearsal in Brussels and it was finally clear what was waiting for the fans. The set list is well-known by know, and when one looks back at it from now it turns out that Tony Banks was right. Many songs most fans had expected did not get played. Instead the set was full of long songs like Domino and Home By The Sea or instrumental attacks like Los Endos and Firth Of Fifth. In between were medleys but also gems like Ripples and Carpet Crawlers. Despite all debates the largest consensus was reached with a potential “negative topic”: Hold On My Heart is manure and the weakest point in the set.
Genesis performed a rollercoaster ride of their works, albeit on an astonishingly high level and with Phil Collins who sang surprisingly well. The greatest thing about this tour was the return of the “singing drummer”, as Phil likes to style himself. He sat behind his drumkit whenever possible, and for Follow You Follow Me he dared do the “stage multitasking trick” of drumming and singing simulaneously. Many people in the audience were heard wondering why Phil was playing the drums so much. Other concert goers found it peculiar that Genesis did not play their “old hits” like In The Air Tonight (someone asked me about that in Dusseldorf) and that Daryl was allowed to play an oversized solo, and that a drum duet is followed by another seven minutes of instrumental music. Los Endos ought to have been the end of the regular set. The guys really could have dared do that.

For many people in the audience the show will have been an eye-opener: This was no Phil Collins concert, but a Genesis show. Imagine that! This was another thing Genesis proved in 2007: The band does make different music than their front man.

Genesis: “When In Rome” - DVD release postponed

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

While the Live Double CD Set Live Over Europe will be released on 23rd November (Germany) / 26th November (Europe) / 27th November (North America) in two formats (Digpak Special Edition / Jewel-Case Standart Version), the new and highly anticipated Live Double-DVD When In Rome has been put back until February or later.
The reason is - obviously - the large amount of special features and the time schedule for all the work that needs to be done for such a project. When In Rome will be released on blu-ray and HD-DVD formats also. More news on that when we have it!

The Double CD Live Over Europe is now available for pre-order:

Genesis Post Tour Blues (I): 3147 - Just A Number?

Friday, October 19th, 2007

In many ways, the Genesis Tour 2007 was different. We recently had the Growing Up Live World Tour (Peter Gabriel) and the First Final Farewell World Tour (Phil Collins), both of them very well documentated with both reviews and photos. But this was all nothing compared to Turn It On Again 2007. We started this blog to keep you informed and to give people outside our website staff the chance to write reviews, post commenty etc. The result was astonishing.
Apart from blog entries and comments (also in our forums), we also wanted to have “some” nice photos on our site. Five month later, we have photos from EVERY show of the tour online, including some soundchecks and dress rehearsals. 3147 may just be a number, but it is also YOUR number. Without your contribution(s), this all would not have been possible.
We thank all of you for sending in tons of photos, many of which we simply couldn’t use, either because we had better options or because we simply received too much. Roughly 15,000 photos were sent in and we used 3147 of them for or gallery.

These are all contributors, sorted alphabetically:
Pablo Aguirre, Selam Anapay, Chris Ainsworth, Magnus Arnason, Kevin B., Kevin Barrie, Jeff Bending, Zach Bernard, Detlef Boeing, Bryan Bretsche, Jos Conter, Darrin Crawford, Bryan Daniels, Sylvain Diciare, Kristina Dion, Lothar Dobras, Okan Dogu, Chris Drake, Christian Eisbrenner, Christian Emge, Ralf Faissner, Matthias Fengler, Patrick Frei, Jörg Gattermann, Christian Gerhardts, Manfred Harries, Torsten Heier, Helmut Janisch, Jerome, John, Jeff Jones, Keegs, Ozan Keskin, Andreas Kirchhammer, F. Peter Gabriel: More Genesis shows in Europe?

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

In a recent interview, that is currently being spread by Reuters, Peter Gabriel hints that Genesis (Tony, Mike & Phil with Daryl and Chester) may continue the tour with new shows in Europe next year. Gabriel says “I’m hoping to see the show because I think they’re going to do some more European dates”. Gabriel also says that a reunion with him and Steve is still not out of the question, but just a lot of work.
Meanwhile, Gabriel has continued work on his next soloalbum, that will be released “in autumn. or spring. In some year”…

Genesis: (Official) Live material from the 2007 tour

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

Since a lot of you keep asking us about releases from this tour, here is a list of what’s available. This was originally compiled by Steffen Gerlach.

CDs from the Encore Series
The official 2CD recordings of all European concerts are not available in regular record shops, but can only be obtained from the American company www.themusic.com. These recordings are a mixture of the soundboard sound and open microphones in the field of the night’s show. They were not modified by Nick Davis. Their quality cannot compare with regular live records.
The North American Encore Series was confirmed just before the dress rehearsal in Toronto (5th September). The Series includes 22 shows from North America (New York City and both Hollywood Bowl Shows are NOT part of this series!)

Live CD
An official 2CD live album will become available in autumn. It will consist of all all the songs that were performed live minus Collins’ introductions, however. The recordings for this will receive post-production by Nick Davis. The music on this release will be compiled from the best takes of all the European shows.

Live DVD
A double DVD set featuring the complete show in Rome (July 14) in a 5.1 mix will also be released in autumn. There will also be a HD version. The bonus material will consist of some backstage impressions from the European tour.

Tour DVD
The Premium members of the official Genesis website (annual fee US$ 35) will receive a DVD with a tour documentary probably early in 2008. This DVD will not be available in record stores. It will contain video material that was not used for the bonus features of the Live DVD.

Backstage clips
The video clips offered in the media / virtual ticket area of the band’s official website may be a teaser for the tour documentary DVD. Premium Members (annual fee US$35) and Virtual Ticket members (for free) are able to access these clips. Further clips will be added until the end of the North American tour (currently available: clips from Herning, Hamburg, Berne and the dress rehearsal in Brussels). Further backstage clips from Paris and Amsterdam have been published at www.telecomcerto.it. These are available for everyone; they were part of an Italian MTV tv special (>torrent* at the Genesis Movement website<).

More live stuff

May 12 - Las Vegas / “Rock Honors“
The first official reunion performance in Las Vegas was broadcast on XX.XX by American tv station VH-1. The band performed Turn It On Again, No Son Of Mine and Drum Duet / Los Endos. The latter piece was only available as a stream from the VH-1 website. Several DVD recordings of this are available as >torrents*<.

June 26 – Düsseldorf / VUE test broadcast
The first concert in Düsseldorf was broadcast via satellite as a test run for the live broadcast to cinemas in England, Spain and Sweden the day after. Satellite TV experts could capture both audio and video of the test broadcast that was not intended for the public, and some of them did. No recordings of this have surfaced yet.

June 27 – Düsseldorf / VUE broadcast
Like the test run, the actual live broadcast could be captured live because the transmission was unencoded. The data stream consisted of the complete concert plus a brief interview special in HD quality and a live 5.1 mix by Nick Davis including a couple of hiccups in the transmission. Several versions of this became available in fans’ cirles on DVD both in HD/5.1 as well as in standard 2.0 sound format. Genesis management very soon after forbade further trade and spread of these DVDs.

June 30 – Paris / RFM Broadcast
French radio station RFM broadcasts the first part of the show from the Parc des Princes. The broadcast included the intro, Behind The Lines (instrumental) / Duke’s End and Turn It On Again. Various CD versions of this are available as >torrents*<.

July 07 – London / Live Earth
Genesis’ performace at this worldwide mega-event at Wembley Stadium London was broadcast by many tv stations either live or as a recording, though not always completely. The band performed Behind The Lines (instr.) / Duke’s End, Turn It On Again, Land Of Confusion and Invisible Touch. The sound was mixed by Nick Davis. Gemischt wurde hier wieder von Nick Davis. Various DVD versions of this are available as >torrents*<.

July 08 London / BBC Special

Several songs from the gig at Twickenham stadium were mixed by Nick Davis after the show and broadcast as a one-hour special on XX.XX by British radio station BBC2. A ninety-minute version is to follow in autumn 2007. The 60-minute special consisted of Behind The Lines (instr.)/Duke’s End, Turn It On Again, No Son Of Mine, Land Of Confusion, Home By The Sea/Second Home By The Sea, I Know What I Like, Mama, Los Endos and Tonight, Tonight, Tonight/Invisible Touch. The longer version is to also include the In The Cage medley and Domino. Various CD versions of this are available as >torrents*<.

July 14 – Rome / Telecomcerto/RAI Special
The final show of the European tour in Rome, where Genesis played to an audience of half a million, will soon be published on DVD, but part of it (60 minutes) will also be broadcast by Italian TV station RAI2. The compilation is to include Turn It On Again, No Son Of Mine, Land Of Confusion, Home By The Sea/Second Home By The Sea, I Know What I Like, Follow You Follow Me, Mama, Drum Duet/Los Endos and Tonight, Tonight, Tonight/Invisible Touch. Nick Davis has mixed the sound after the show. DVD recordings of the TV broadcast are likely to appear as Torrents.

September 05 – Toronto / Dress Rehearsal Live Stream
As a special for all premium members (annual fee of US$35) and Virtual Ticket members (for free) of the official Genesis website there will be a live stream of the first part of the dress rehearsal in Toronto. Backstage impressions featuring, among others, Nick Davis set the mood for it.

*Torrents are currently the most widely used means of exchanging uncompressed audio/video data via the internet. Genesis management tolerate these torrents, provided the material in question has not been officially released by Genesis. The links provided on this page lead directly to the best versions of the corresponding recordings at torrent.genesis-movement.org, the best address for torrents of Genesis and related. Go >here< to find out about torrents in general.

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

The official Genesis Website will provide a stream of the first two songs from tonight’s show at the Stade Olympique in Montreal. The show is basically sold out, the roof is closed (actually it is all the time after it malfunctioned a while ago) and the band will use their big outdoor stage again, the one you might be familiar with from Europe and Toronto (BMO-Field).
To watch the web-stream, you must be a member of the official website. The stream starts approx at 8.15hrs local time at this link.
Details about Montreal (City, Venue etc) are available here.

Genesis: Dress Rehearsals in Toronto

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

Last night (CET/GMT) the long awaited dress rehearsal for the North American tourleg took place in Toronto’s Air Canada Centre.

The most important info first: there were no setlist changes from the European set. The rehearsal was mainly done in order to test the yet unused indoor stage.

The beginning of the show (Behind The Lines/Duke’s End, Turn It On Again, No Son Of Mine, Land Of Confusion) was broadcasted on the official website via live-stream. A positive remark: it seems that almost every fan lurking outside the AC Centre was allowed to attend the rehearsals – not only the sweepstakes winners.

Toronto Dress Rehearsals

Before the show there was a live press conference and Genesis producer Nick Davis interviewed people like Tony Smith, Geoff Callingham and shortly before showtime the full band. According to Phil there are still 2 songs (which he didn’t name but it’s probably either Jesus He Knows Me, That’s All or In Too Deep) that probably make it into the set at a later stage of the US tour. Tony Smith was asked about the future plans of the band. He said that most likely there won’t be an album in the traditional sense but that he could imagine a single song – probably a longer one – being published through the internet. In the past the band hat always stated that they „fear“ the commitments that come along with the promotion of a full new album. Tony Smith’s statement regarding a continuation of the tour or a Lamb tour was „never say never“. He admitted that he always has a few plans up his sleeve in case the band decides to tour or whatever at short notice.

The owner of TheMusic.com announced the release of a North American Encore Series (i.e. soundboard recordings from every show).

The rehearsal show and most likely as well the interviews will be available on the official website shortly – probably only for paying members.

Genesis: North American Encore Series confirmed

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

Encore SeriesDuring the interview section of today’s webcast - from the dress rehearsal in Toronto’s Air Canada Center, the Encore Series for North America was confirmed. For a while it was unsure whether or not they would be able to do an Encore Series (see our interview with Genesis, conducted in June this year), so this is really good news for all fans.
The Encore Series is provided by US company themusic.com (located in Los Angeles) and means that each of the 25 North American Genesis-Shows will be available on silver-pressed official live 2CD-Sets! The European leg of the tour is already available on 2CD for $30 each. The London show is sold out at the moment, but will be available again by mid-October!
