It may be a strange question, but did anyone ever think that this song was talking about Hackett? They say they all get along, but he seems to be excluded often and there is definitely an awkwardness in the interviews on Sum of the Parts.

It never would have occurred to me, but looking at the lyrics I don't think so. Steve left the band, not the other way round.

Genesis were the one band that never seemed to hold grudges when band members left. I’m sure there were strong feelings (how can there not be when you spend so much time together and put so much emotional capital into your music), but the guys seemed to genuinely like each other. Hackett was such a core part of what they did, but I doubt there was much awkwardness.

The meaning of song lyrics is very often subject to the listener's opinion, so I never really looked deeper unless the band talked openly about things (i.e. Solsbury Hill, Duchess, Since I Lost You etc)

I've heard this said before. Can't see it myself

Possibly the best all-time example is In The Air Tonight!
