Your favorite tracks on ... "So"

I don't know if some people think Sledgehammer isn't 'cool' or something because it was such a huge hit. I worship it. It has his love of people like Otis Redding all over it.

And it was one of the first videos I recall seeing on MTV as a kid. I was blown away. That and the video for Touch of Grey by the Grateful Dead where they all turn into skeletons. Good memories.

Sledgehammer is, of course, the huge hit single from So. The song with the funny, innovative, disturbing video from So. The song from So with the most radio play (probably the most radio play of all of Peter's songs, Solsbury Hill perhaps excepted). Our collective ears may have become a bit blunt to its charm, the wonderful colours of this song have worn out and faded a bit because this song is, well, see above.

  • I enjoy Sledgehammer and think it is a well-crafted song. Tony Levin's bass part is particularly masterful. The lyric is humourous and Peter gives a great vocal performance. However it is fairly middle-of-the-pack for me in terms of his songs on this album. In Your Eyes is sublime, especially the full-length version with the intro and outro section. I love the moody atmosphere of Mercy Street. Don't Give Up has poignant lyrics, great vocal performances, and another great bass part by Tony Levin. This Is the Picture is quirky and great. Big Time is in the same humourous territory as Sledgehammer, but for me is more fun.

So, Mercy Street was #1 for a while here, but now it's Red Rain. Unsurprisingly, Big Time does not have that many fans (though I must admit, I like to listen to this when I'm out for a running workout)

No surprise I think. Red rain is one of his all time best tracks, I'm sure it would also be on top of a general Gabriels songs poll result.

  • Red Rain and Mercy Street was my two favorites songs of the album and this is the reason why i voting without hesitation theses two songs. Theses two productions was fire and was timeless and dramatic, a must for all of them. I was hesitant for Big Time and In Your Eyes, because theses two songs was very great in the production, but i choose tghe first because of his psychedelic video who i love more to Sledgehammer.

In fact, Sledgehammer was so-so and We Do What We're Told was the worst song of the album, a horrible song and didn't fit with the rest of the album.

  • Mercy Street

    Red Rain

Excellent Birds (This is the Picture).

I have a weird reaction now to Sledgehammer. As much as some like to think of PG as being “above” commercialism the fact is he clearly appreciated that it was a big hit and tried to replicate it in theme and music (rather blatantly IMO) on the next album with Steam and Kiss That Frog.

I disagree. It's a very odd, jarring song but I love it for that. It gives me no authority on the quality of the song or your right to dislike it, but by coincidence I was studying the experiments referenced in it at the same time I was listening to the album a lot. They creeped me out, and the song fit the story perfectly.

  • Easy one ... I thought

    well, not quite :D
