Your Top Tony Banks Solo Songs?

  • What are your all time favourite solo songs by Tony?

I don't listen to his solo work nearly as much as I should, although I have all his recordings.

Lately, I've been struck by the song The Border - remastered version.

Tony's playing, the arrangement, Alistair Gordon's vocals and lyrics are all outstanding.

Any other fans of this song?

The Border Tony Banks - Remastered

The intro always reminds me a little of Anthony Phillips Anthony Phillip's Force Majeure:

    Force Majeure (2020 Remaster)

"She looks at me and gently smiles, as if she knew I'd ask her all the time..."

  • Without thinking too hard...

    For a While

    The Waters of Lethe

    Charm

    And the Wheels Keep Turning

    Lion of Symmetry

    Thursday the Twelfth

    The Border

    I Wanna Change the Score

    An Island in the Darkness

    Charity Balls

  • Thanks.

That list is so similar to may own best tracks!

Any other songs we may have overlooked that demand to be at the top of Tony's best work?

"She looks at me and gently smiles, as if she knew I'd ask her all the time..."

  • When I first got Bankstatement, I recall thinking there was just one standout track from that album, and "The Border" was it. I've since warmed up to the entire album, but the song that made an immediate favourable impression remains my favourite from Bankstatement.

My shortlist of favourite TB tracks, in no particular order, would be:

    You

    K2

    The Border

    Red Day on Blue Street

    Angel Face

Still It Takes Me by Surprise

    Another Murder of a Day

    A Piece of You

With four of those eight tracks being off Still, it would seem likely that album would be my favourite — but it's actually my second favourite. I find most of Tony's albums, including Still, to be a bit uneven — great moments mixed with some less-than-great moments.

The one exception for me is ACF which I thoroughly enjoy evenly from beginning to end.

  • I am the person who likes Tony's vocals.

I will just list a few which I like a great deal

    Another Murder Of A Day

    I'll Be Waiting

This Is Love (including the video)!

    Red Day On Blue Street

    Queen Of Darkness

    At The Edge Of Night

    Moving Under

    Throwback

    Shortcut To Somewhere

    etc

  • An approximate Top 10:

    Angel Face

    Red Day on Blue Street

Don't Turn Your Back On Me

    Something To Live For

    And The Wheels Keep Turning

    By You

    Queen of Darkness

    Barbara

    Lion of Symmetry

    Lucky Me

There isn't more of A CURIOUS FEELING on this list, even though that's one of Tony's better albums, because it's very even -- i.e., any given song from it is about as good all the rest.

Little known fact: Before the crowbar was invented...

    ...crows simply drank at home.

  • The Border

    This is Love

    And the Wheels Keep Turning

    Smiling’ Jack Casey

    Moving Under

    Charm

    The Waters of Lethe

    Water Into Wine

    Another Murder of a Day

    Thursday the Twelfth

  • I like Queen of Darkness, he was clearly making a concerted effort to push the boundaries a little, and the female vocalist was good I thought. She would have worked maybe a lot better than the weak enough guys he had on other tracks.

Island in the Darkness was good too, he put a legit guitar solo in! Go Tony!

Other than those two, I like a few tracks from the Fugitive, they have an out of focus wistful atmosphere. And I like A Piece of You. It vibes Twin Peaks which I love.

  • Lucky Me

    After The Lie

    A Curious Feeling

    Say You'll Never Leave Me

    Thirty Three's

    By You

    That Night

    The Border

    The More I Hide It

    Red Day On Blue Street

    I Wanna Change The Score

    The Final Curtain

    A Piece Of You

    Never Let Me Know

    An Island In The Darkness

    :)
