Will we ever hear / see Phil solo again?

  • Though recently, critics seem to be much more pro-Collins than in the past... presumably a lot of those all old critics with axes to grind have retried or died, and subsequent generations are less about hating for the sake of it, and more willing to engage.

A new dark, atmospheric, brooding Phil Collins solo album full of minor keys with a few thoughtful ballads could be just what the world needs. I know I do. ;)

Two interesting points. Someone recently said something about younger generations of listeners now appearing who didn't live through the 'Collins Is The Music Antichrist' period we experienced, so are without that mindset, having not been there to absorb it. In a similar way there's something in your notion that the frontline of critics of who'd regularly deride him have moved on.

Re your hypothetical PC album, while it won't happen I agree it's a nice thought. Sometimes a fragile voice can be very affecting in the studio, given the right material/production etc and create a nice mood and atmosphere. I really like this non-existent, notional Phil Collins album that will never exist. It might be my favourite one of his!

EDIT - I see we've already touched on this.

  • I guess that's s a question of perspective and in some school of thought it's 'new' until it is heard... like that classic if cliched quote about having your whole life to write to your first album/book/movie, but 18 months to write your second. When in truth many writers go back to old notebooks and ideas from years ago.

Phil has plenty of new (unheard by the public) stuff written, some of it up there with what he consider his best material. I'm not sure if he'll develop an appetite to release any of it whilst still alive and potentially endure yet another critical kicking which invariably gets him down. It's not like he needs the money. If he does release it'll be because he wants to (or Tony Smith or his family persuade him). Though recently, critics seem to be much more pro-Collins than in the past... presumably a lot of those all old critics with axes to grind have retried or died, and subsequent generations are less about hating for the sake of it, and more willing to engage.

If Phil could do an album like Johnny Cash's last few efforts, or Neil Diamond's albums with RIck Rubin, I would eat it up, not to mention that songs like that would take us back to his peak, i.e. the first two solo albums.

Warren Zevon's last effort comes to mind as another good comparator, if this hypothetical Phil album were to emerge.

  • Right now, even if Phil released anything and went on tour, he would definitely gain a lot of young fans. At a concert in Warsaw 3 years ago, I saw a lot of young people - about 30 years old, just like me. Of course, the fact that Phil would first take some rest and find a balance in his private life, but it would be great if in a few years he would release something new - or a few bootlegs from rehearsals - or a full video or from 1982, 1985 or 1997. :) sure the fans would go crazy about it. :)))))))))) I can wait for it for years. He deserved a rest at the moment. :)

  • Mark Batatis wrote a month ago on Facebook that Phil reportedly requires 24-hour medical care. Supposedly. I don't know where Mark found out about this - but he certainly has his sources. In any case, it is rather unchanged - or even worse. It is shocking what treatment options Phil has compared to the vast majority of people. It's hard to believe.

Mark who? I would never trust "info" like this - besides, he needed support during the past few tours anyway. He has retired. Let him be a private man. That's all not our business. He won't do something again. That's over.

That's one of the most solidly sensible posts on this entire forum.

  • As you say it is none of our business - he has chosen to step away from public life and we should respect that. All I hope is that even in his physically diminished state, he is able to find some happiness and take some joy from what he has left of his life. A man who has brought pleasure to so many and given so much, but one who is clearly prone to depression - particularly when he's not working - I can imagine it's tough for him.

It is clear in recent years that critical opinion is turning and his legacy is being re-evaluated. I really hope he is aware of this and sees some validation there.

Good question? I types that into google, and it came up with 4 alternatives, and a link to the instagram page of Mark BatItis! ^^

There are so many fake stories and click bait titles on FB including a page where someone is actually pretending to be Phil himself... I wouldn't believe anything if it's not come from Mike, Tony, Nic, Peter or T. Smith.

  • But I guess a person might ask a question about Phil's health, right? It is nothing bad. I'm also interested in how Phil is feeling - because there has been silence on this subject, we haven't heard anything about him at all for 2 years. It's obvious that Phil won't go on any tour again, either alone or with Genesis - none of us expects that. Besides, Ronnie is no longer alive, and most of the people in his band are already over 70 years old. It's a pity, however, that Phil is in such poor health - 73 years old is not an age to be de facto bedridden. Sad thing.

  • Mark Batatis is the administrator of 2 Facebook profiles dedicated to Genesis - you can find links to them below. He has been a collector for several decades. It's strange that you don't know who it is. Christian definitely knows. The groups are private, only from what I see, the post about Phil's health was removed due to controversial and "hating" comments. I can't find it yet. But such a discussion was 10000000000000% at the very end of May. If necessary, users of this group will confirm it.

Links to both groups (including the Genesis collectors group, where you can establish trade contacts) are here. By the way, you can join them.

I'll keep looking for this post, but it looks like it was deleted (there was a really long discussion under it). As I wrote - if necessary, people will confirm my version.

  • I've found the comment!

Actually, it was not uttered by Mark Bataitis, but by Phil Myland (Bataitis was the moderator and began the chat with the first post).

    Myland stated:

I read [Chester] was saying how sad he was to hear of Phil’s poor health & was open to reaching out to Phil but not sure if he as made that move let’s just hope so as I’ve been told Phil is now having 24 hour care.

    Myland later went on:

He has deteriorated since then unfortunately

& my information is from a very reliable source he is not very well.

Alas, the worst omens are confirmed. :(

No it's not strange. No one on here is expected to know who Genesis collectors and site administrators are, and - SHOCK HORROR! - not all of us are on Facebook. Some of us detest it and aren't interested in joining it or visiting any groups on it.

  • Oddly enough, your post reminded me that I do know the name, he joined us here on the forum a while back, after he was banned from Facebook for a couple of months. As soon as he was back on there, he deserted here like a sinking ship. As memory serves, his time here demonstrated why he was banned, one of our less likeable members!

As for joining FB groups about Genesis, I struggle to stay on here at times!
