Create an album of lesser-known gems by any artist

  • We've talked endlessly about great albums and classic songs by many different artists. However many artists have incredible depth and even their lesser-known and sometimes obscure songs can be amazing. So my suggestion is for you to compile an album's worth of songs (number may vary based on the length of the songs) by an artist composed of great songs that weren't singles, weren't radio hits, and would generally not be recognized by the casual music listener. Let's exclude Genesis from consideration as we've had plenty of discussion about their lesser-known gems.

I'll start us off. Here's my suggestion for a compilation by The Beatles:

    This Boy

    I'll Be Back

    Bad Boy

    I'm Down

    I'm Looking Through You

    If I Needed Someone

    Rain

    She Said She Said

    The Inner Light

    It's All Too Much

    Hey Bulldog

    Happiness Is a Warm Gun

    Mother Nature's Son

    Savoy Truffle

    Two of Us

You'll note that it is mainly Lennon and Harrison songs. I think this is because Paul was so good at writing catchy material that more of his songs are fairly well known.

  • This would be a little more than a 46-minute compilation, music by Pink Floyd, all of it pre-Dark Side of the Moon. More than half the tracks I selected are written or co-written by Richard Wright, who I think is generally underappreciated as a composer. Paint Box was a B-side, so I don't know if that would disqualify it. The A-side was Apples & Oranges which tanked as a single.

    Childhood's End

    A Pillow Of Winds

    Fat Old Sun

    Burning Bridges

    Summer '68

    Paint Box

    Matilda Mother

    Remember A Day

    Green Is The Colour

    Cymbaline

    See-Saw

    Jugband Blues

    • Official Post

    Chris Rea

I have all of his albums and I really like the later ones a lot. Always thought the lesser known stuff is the better

  • Le Orme (italian prog band).

    Mita Mita.

    Morte di un fiore.

    Figure di cartone.

    Frutto acerbo.

    Laserium Floyd .

    Vedi Amsterdam.

    Un angelo.

    Il mago.

    Il Treno.

    Venerdì.

    25 maggio 1931.

I choose one* from 1970 to 1990 (the last with Tony Pagliuca).

    * except Felona and Sorona.

  • Here is my list for The Who:

    So Sad About Us

    Tattoo

    Glow Girl

    Naked Eye

    When I Was a Boy

    Put the Money Down

    Joker James

    Blue, Red, and Grey

    Imagine a Man

    However Much I Booze

    Had Enough

    Another Tricky Day

    The Quiet One

    Cry If You Want

    All This Music Must Fade

  • Great idea and I really want to do a Beatles one but quite a few will duplicate yours and it'll look like I'm just copying you! But I'll still do it.

    Meanwhile here's an REM one.

    Welcome To The Occupation

    Cuyahoga

    Sad Professor

    Mr Richards

    Star 69

    Undertow

    Electrolite

    Untitled one off of Green

    Fretless

    Perfect Circle

    The Lifting

    Be Mine

    Abandon all reason

  • The Beatles - I've decided to swerve your selections Dr. John much as I'd ordinarily include many of them, plus I gave some thought to your interesting point re Macca's songs and tried to address it

    Getting Better

    There's A Place

    Cry Baby Cry

    Every Little Thing

    I Want To Tell You

    I Got A Feeling

    She Said She Said

You Never Give Me Your Money

    You Won't See Me

    Love You To

    Blue Jay Way

    Martha My Dear

    I'm A Loser

    If I Fell

    Long Long Long

I Want You (She's So Heavy)

    Abandon all reason

Edited once, last by Backdrifter ().

  • What a great idea! I know some of the REM songs, and they are both great Beatles playlists (I would choose the second one - except what is If I Could Tell You? Do you mean I Want To Tell You)?

To the surprise of nobody I will attempt Dire Straits. Their catalogue isn't that large & I flatter myself a lot of it is well known.

    Lions

    Southbound Again

    News

    Single Handed Sailor

    Follow Me Home

    Hand In Hand

    It Never Rains

    Two Young Lovers

    The Man's Too Strong

    You & Your Friend

    How Long

    Millionaire Blues

  • Your Beatles list has many that were on my short list.

  • Mark Knopfler; the problem with him is there are a lot of obscure tracks which have only just been officially released as part of two studio albums box sets, so I don't actually know a lot of them yet. Then there is all his soundtrack work.

A Night In Summer Long Ago

    I'm The Fool

Silvertown Blues (if people don't know this, they should)

    Wanderlust

    Hill Farmer's Blues

    Marbletown
    The Trawlerman's Song

    Postcards From Paraguay

    So Far From The Clyde

    In The Sky

    Kingdom Of Gold

    Lights Of Taormina

    River Towns

    Matchstick Man

That was near impossible. I could do that again, and it would be completely different.

  • REM was going to be another one for me to do, so now I have to avoid your choices (Untitled and Perfect Circle are two of my favourites):

    Sitting Still

    Pretty Persuasion

Life and How to Live It

    I Believe

    Disturbance at the Heron House

    King of Birds

    Hairshirt

    Near Wild Heaven

    Me In Honey

    Sweetness Follows

    New Test Leper

    At My Most Beautiful

  • Nice ones there, normally I'd have picked Sweetness, a huge favourite.

But - you and your chron listings.... 😖.... !!!

    Abandon all reason

  • U2

Daddy's Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car

    Standup Comedy

    Slug

    Theme From Let's Go Native

    Gone

    Breathe

    Salomé (Zooromancer mix)

    Your Blue Room

    Zoo Station

The Lady With The Spinning Head (extended version)

Three of these technically are Passengers but I think they still count.

    Abandon all reason

  • Great choices. I might add The Three Sunrises and The Refugee.

  • The nice thing about the submissions so far is that now I have a whole bunch of song recommendations to investigate (which was part of my, admittedly slightly selfish, agenda).
