    Our reviewer said:

The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway by Mark Bell will be the new standard against which other books on Genesis will have to be measured - in terms of depth of interpretation, abundance (and citation!) of evidence, and consistency of perspective.

  • Christian I was always interested in how the album came to be, especially any details of the band during their stay at Headley Grange. Is there a chapter dedicated to their time at Headley Grange? I really enjoyed the Mario Giammetti books as they are some of the best to tell these "behind the scene's" stories.

I recommend to read the review to get an impression what this book is about and why it's different from other books

  • Bloody Amazon. Can't avoid them.

...that said, I've just won an amazon gift card so at least I can offset the cost.

I love "With their last ounces of strength, the musicians wrestle an enigmatic masterpiece from themselves"

My god, the drama of it! I have an image of them slumped or lying on the floor, weak and trembling as they just about manage to slide the faders for the last time before collapsing completely. This is going to be gripping!

    Abandon all reason

  • Interesting claim that it's the most consistently bestselling of the back catalogue. If that's true, I wonder if it relates to the flagging of it as the 'cool' Genesis album that it's "ok to like", so it has some appeal beyond the core fanbase.

I've read it and there is no mention of Headley Grange. It talks about the "genesis" of the album, but nothing is telling me how detailed that gets. So based on the review, it sounds like a good book, but I'm not sure it will go any deeper than the interviews we have already heard and read about.

  • Blimey. In my attempt to get it from Barnes and Noble (see Backdrifter comment re Amazon) I discovered an academic book from 2008 about TLLDOB. Seemingly by a professor of musicology in Kentucky. I'd say this is a dense read!

We did a review about that as well (by coincidence, it was the same reviewer). Both books were written by scientists, that makes both books interesting. Yet they are different and have a different focus.

  • I sprang/sprung for the new one. I sense a rediscovery of the album will accompany it. It has slowly inched it's way up my list of preferences in Genesis albums, probably because it is that bit denser so there's always something new to discover. I've always loved much of sides 1 and 2, especially hairless heart and chamber of 32 doors, and I love the lamia. I felt it was all weighed down a bit too much by fillery bits that just didn't hook me enough to keep the momentum going, and I flat out don't like slippermen, which has an outsized negative effect in the way Epping forest has on SEBTP for me.

Look forward to perusing the book and probably giving the album a spin or three 😃.

Yes, the stay at Headley Grange is pretty well covered in the first few chapters.

  • It's a good read! I highly recommend this book. This is interesting for anybody who wants to dive deep into the world of The Lamb.

The author also hints more books about other albums will follow. Looking forward to reading them!

Me too - about half way in, lots of interesting information in there. The image on the last page or so seems to suggest Foxtrot next, but I also read a footnote on one page mentioning the Wind & Wuthering 1976-77 edition. Seems this book is print on demand - I ordered it 8th March and it arrived with 'Printed 9th March 2023' on the very last page - maybe that explains the high cost of the book?

Think that's the way Amazon operate, guess you don't end up with old stock that way.
