"From Genesis To Revelation" - new version with new mixes, Anthony Phillips hints

  • To me, it doesn't matter if any of the Genesis members are involved. I'm just hoping that the end result will allow us to hear the album the way the band intended. And, that we can actually hear the individual instruments.

Just not sure how the band's involvement would ultimately make any difference.

I think it mattters a lot whether or not the original musicians are involved in such a project. Right now we don’t really know what the essence of this is, but should they really remix / reproduce the album, then their involvement is crucial …

... good things come to those who wait

    ???

How could a remix help make the album closer to what the band intended without said remix having any input from the band.

Since everyone involved in the original is still alive, I don't see why getting them involved in the remixing process is anything but a good thing.

  • Is my memory failing me, or was a release of FGTR on Cherry Red first hinted at by Ant a couple of years ago now? If so they've been working on this a loooong time!

That’s my memory as well and the timespan would lend itself to the involvement of the band. If Peter is involved it could be a long wait!

  • I think it’s a bit odd to expect a better outcome, should the band not be involved. Still hope they are all involved (all four).

So, let’s wait and see what they will announce.

Because the band are all grown up and a long way from where they were when they made the album. I don't think it would be too much of a stretch to say there might be people from outside the band better able to a dispassionate, objective take on what the teenage Genesis would have wanted than the aged members of Genesis themselves. I fear the weight of their experience might smother the naive charm of their teenage selves.

Or maybe not! As far as I can tell they all seem pretty much at peace with themselves these days, so perhaps the temptation to rewrite the past isn't there and what we'll get will be a sensitive, period-appropriate mix without the strings. I honestly think that's more likely at this point, and I'm looking forward to hearing it, but given their track record I do think there's also a reasonable chance it could all go badly wrong.

  • If someone wants to listen to FGTR without strings, they can easily do so right now by programming 50 Years Ago in the same FGTR sequence.

I, on the other hand, can't wait to get hold of the (hopefully) upcoming Cherry Records release to listen to the unreleased material.

  • I can't fathom why Mike would grant his approval of a remixed FGTR, but won't contemplate a much-requested remix of Smallcreep's Day ?(

  • Never been a fan of the first album but I am curious what they have done.

Maybe nobody has asked for that? There's a difference between offering something to the band or pushing projects themselves.

  • Mike has been clear that he has no interest in revisiting his earlier solo career. I assume he has approved this remix of FGTR because he doesn't have to do much other than sign it off. Anthony is clearly still engaged and passionate about those early days and I expect the others as his friends have gone along with it, but I doubt they've had much involvement, outside of maybe a few lines of interview and green lighting the thing. I would love to be proved wrong but history clearly shows that Genesis are their own worst archivists. Anthony is probably the only exception to that - his solo career reissues show that he not only keeps things but he's willing to see them put out there.

Either way I'm very excited for this release and hope it's a definitive summary of the pre Trespass era along with a remix of the album itself. This has the potential to be something rather special - and knowing how these things work it also has the potential to be a misfire.

Well, the fact this release has been in the works for so long kind of indicates Peter is involved ;)

We wait and we wonder ...

    cheers
