Notes: A song about South Africa? In 1989, Phil Collins was the man with the socially critical songs, after years of being considered more of a relationship singer. With Colours in 1989, he succeeded in creating a song that was almost Genesis-like, probably also due to its length. Colours is the only real long song in his solo career. Live, he went one better and fought a drum duel with Chester Thompson.

    cheers

  • Phil's good intentions in the lyrics aside, I really don't think of this as a "long" (or "progressive") song. It's actually two pieces -- connected lyrically but not musically -- joined by an instrumental link that's not really related to either (although it does get referenced at the end of the second).

“When the waitress asked if I wanted my pizza cut into four or eight slices, I said, ‘Four. I don’t think I can eat eight.’” -- Yogi Berra

A soldier survived mustard gas in combat, and then pepper spray from the police. He's now a seasoned veteran.

  • Hadn't heard this one for 30+ years. After one listen, I give it a nine. I definitely prefer the second half of the song to the first, but it never really catches fire for me.

I also prefer the second part, but I like this track a lot and I wonder why Phil never did longer tracks (besides this one) on his solo albums ...

    13 points

  • Cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeese.

It's got good moments and I prefer the second half but for me it hasn't aged well. Phil puts a classic 80s Phil imprint onto something intended to be a bit deeper and perhaps more progressive, but it doesn't quite work. I liked it a lot at the time but now my toes curl when I listen to it. It's miles better than Another Day In Paradise though.

Contrast with when Peter went a bit deeper around that time, e.g. In Your Eyes or Secret World, which were either side of this album. Those tracks are timeless, really special, but Colours is not in the same league. I would put Hand in Hand (another where Phil was going beyond the regular "Phil space") many leagues above this one. It's brilliant and I never tire of listening to it.

9 for Colours though. Good moments do not make a great track.

  • 13

Certainly one of the better tracks on BS. It's in two parts, and somehow it's a combination of two songs (but then, Genesis did that as well).

A shame he didn't play this track on later tours.

... there's a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in

  • This wasn’t my favorite when the album came out. It took a while to appreciate this one but more than 12 points would be unfair, compared to I wish it would rain down and other highlights..

    ... make tomorrow today!

  • I love almost every song on ...But Seriously, and although it's not at the top of my ranking, it's a great PC song. I love the idea of the contrasted slow and fast sections. Reminds me of Domino in that way-which I also like, ending with a great powerful payoff.

IMO this is the one song that IMO has the best representation of the "live band" sound that Phil was clearly going for on this album with several of the songs. I mean, apart from the drum interlude, this song sounds like it indeed WAS recorded live-just without an audience!

  • I also really like the horns on this one...well, I like the horns on this whole album.

You know, it's funny-I remember recently seeing an interview he did, talking about his Both Sides album. In that interview he addressed the 'no horns' approach and he said he 'tried to do that on his last album' (But Seriously), but it ended up getting away from him and he used them anyway. I think that's hilarious actually cos-not only did he not succeed in avoiding horns on But Seriously, he actually ended up making the album that used them the HEAVIEST out of ALL of his albums!! LOL

  • I would say 12 points. There's something missing for me to give more points, not even sure why / what. Still, this is a good track!

... good things come to those who wait

  • I sort of rediscovered this track just recently when I played the album in its entirety. I think Phil should have explored this kind of song more often. It’s a good track. Of course you can say those are two tracks and simply put together but that also is correct for the majority of longer prog tracks.

    cheers
