Genesis: 2007 & 2021 Rehearsal info and footage

  • I really can't complain about 2007 - I love the bootleg from Toronto 2007. This is the best "concert" from this tour - Phil sounded really great during those rehearsals on September 5, 2007. I'll be honest - I only want 3 songs from 2007 that were played during rehearsals - Abacab, Jesus He Knows Me and In Too Deep. The rest is really enough, a lot from 2007 has already been shown. A lot.

Agree on all counts! Come Rain or Come Shine was a very in-depth documentary. Sure, I'd love to see more, but 2007 seems pretty well covered.

  • Well, Toronto 2007 already was the second tour leg, so they all have been in good shape and I wouldn't compare this to the rehearsals in late 2006.

Come Rain Or Shine was great, but some recordings from the 2006 NYC rehearsals would be awesome! I think they also did One for the vine?

  • No. Supposedly only Abacab, Jesus and In Too Deep. There are also rumors of That's All- but no One For The Vine.

Sure? I also remember a list that was circulating on the internet at the time - or maybe Tony considered this but they never tried it? Can't recall.

some are wise ... and some otherwise

  • maybe Tony considered this but they never tried it?

    I can imagine this.

Tony (hopeful, pleading): well chaps, how about One For The Vine?

    Phil, Mike: <silently staring>

A tech clears his throat. Nick stares awkwardly at the ground. Somewhere outside, a bird squawks.

Tony (resigned): oh. Alright then, I see, um, shall we give Turn It On Again another pass then?

  • I am pretty sure One For the Vine was not a consideration. I vaguely remember something else being considered before Ripples was selected.

The biggest loss was of a complete Cinema Show. They were at least considering it in Come Rain Or Shine but Phil thought it went too high for him to sing. He gave up prematurely because the top notes he sings falsetto in IKWIL go higher.

Oh, I thought it was because of Mike Rutherford, who didn't even try to remember his parts with the special tuning he was using on guitar. It's a shame, today there are lots of videos explaining it, maybe at the time there were already a few existing on the Internet he could have looked at, at least...

I think Mike comments on not remembering the tuning, but I’m sure Daryl could have figured it out.

My memory is of PC struggling to reach "...late for her cinema show", there's a pause, followed by a conclusive sounding "Well that's that one out" type comment.

Yeah, but in reality, it was literally at the beginning of the rehearsals & I doubt Phil had seriously given it a proper attempt at that point.

A lot of songs they dropped the key for, so could have done so for a few others.

2007 would have been perfect for a few different songs inc duchess

Bear in mind we see a tiny edited micro-snippet of the rehearsals. We don't know if they did work at it beyond that bit we see and abandoned it for other reasons, perhaps as Duke of Earl of Mar suggested. Not sure the dropped key approach would've worked well for TCS in the way it did for, say, Mama.

They excavated a couple of Duke bits and Ripples but yeah it would've been nice to get a couple more 'surprises'.

  • Abacab, Thats All, In Too Deep and Jesus are all available as part of multiple recordings from NYC and Cossonay in 2006 and 2007. These recordings are part of the "Private Trading Pool" I dont have them but have heard them. They are very good. I hope they circulate sometime soon!!!

Would like to hear them. I remember holding out great hope that Abacab would make it into the US setlist as they had said something very suggestive in an interview, something along the lines of "we know how to play it", and it's one of the ones I hear every now and then on the radio here. Oh well.

As an aside, I'm surprised stuff like this can stay private in this day and age.

  • It would be great to have it - thanks for the info. :))))))))) I thought no one had it. :))))))))))))))))))))) Honestly? Only these 4 songs are missing and we don't want anything else from 2007 hahaha - this tour is too well documented. Only these 4 songs are missing and goodbye.

I am a big fan of Abacab, the song and have wanted them to play it the last two tours since it was left off since the Invisible Touch Tour. I was so disappointed when I heard that they rehearsed it in 2007 (and in 2021) and dropped it. I wondered if they actually played it in rehearsals in 2007 since Phil admitted that he started to sing it and couldn't get behind the lyrics. Did they play a full version with instrumental? Are these private recordings professional (soundboard, monitors, etc.)? What can you share about what you heard?

Also, I thought they came much closer to playing it in 2021 since it was on the setlist and they said it was dropped right at the end. I do seem to think that they only played the first half and not the instrumental for some reason since they put the single version on the Last Domino CD. I have no confirmation of this though. Does anyone know anything or have heard a 2021 version?

  • I'm totally guessing, but I'd imagine they were considering a full version of Abacab for 2021. There were several songs that were rehearsed that would have given a chance for Phil and Nic to play double drums, and they were dropped from the set once they decided that Phil wasn't going to play any drums.

  • I really wish someone would release the 2006 2007 rehearsals since usapcfan says that these exist, and those missing songs are on there. I would think it would be less likely that the 2020/2021 rehearsals would leak this soon. I don't know if anyone has ever heard any recordings from those rehearsals.

Its still interesting that they sold pieces of a symbol that they said Phil played in rehearsals, but there's never been any evidence or proof he ever did.

  • Phil's Premier kit from the Duke Tour did make an appearance at rehearsals. There's no telling how much he actually played it, but I think songs like Abacab and Los Endos were probably considered because they're songs with double drums where Nic could have taken the lead and Phil could have just held down a beat. I'm guessing once it was decided that Phil wasn't going to play at all they probably dropped the ones that no one else felt as strongly about.
