RIP Richard Macphail

  • Terrible and sad news!

I thought the other day - oh dear, Phil is really looking old, but I'd never imagined Richard would go before him ...

too early definitely and a lovely guy he was!

  • Shocking indeed! He was way too young to leave us. I never met him, I just know him through his book (been reading it for three times so far) and the online interviews I saw and the mentions of the other band members. They wouldn't have carried on after Ant left, had it not been for Richard Macphail! He seemed to be one the most uncomplicated people on earth and a real practical guy, with him on board things worked. What a loss.

  • Tony has just posted a nice tribute on the Genesis official social media accounts.

I was so sad to hear of the death of my dear friend Richard Macphail. Genesis owes him so much, he was a crucial part of those early years, and without his support and encouragement the band would have struggled to survive. However more importantly, for over fifty years, he was a wonderful, kind and loyal friend, our families shared so many happy times together. We will always remember his larger-than-life personality and uncontrollable enthusiasm, no one could shout or clap louder than Rich when the situation demanded it.

He called only last week, and it is unbelievable to think that is the last time we will hear from him.

We will all miss him so much.

They've gone and changed the rules again,,,"

  • Oh that is so sad! Looks like this was not expected at all? Sincere condolences top his friends and family. Have met him once, such a lovely guy!

exactly! Don't want to be too petty, but its "Macphail"!

I suspected I might have got it wrong & have corrected. Both Peter & Tony posted messages on Facebook.

  • Very sad news indeed and wonderful words from his old bandmate(s).

I met him once and oif course I read his book. Gone too soon!

... there's a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in

  • This is very sad news. The Genesis family loses a great man, one of its key members. I've never had the chance to meet him or even read his book but I heard him on one of his shows, he was really interesting. RIP.

  • Thanks for everything indeed.

Based on interviews over the years, and comments since he died, it seems unlikely the Genesis that we love would have happened in the way it did without him.

I think we owe him a lot.

  • sad to hear...Reading some of the articles and reaction , makes me realise how much he was part of the inner sanctum of the band . Compared to lots of other bands...the fact that all in their 70s and still all around does make them almost an exception ..which doesn't make up for the sad loss
