The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway - anniversary celebration

  • News From Steve Hoffman Forum:

    - When I posited the idea that the Nick Davis remixes were a little “loud”, he suggested I turn the volume down then…

Suggesting that Tony doesn't understand the principles of compression or limiting in any way!

  • Not that I'm going to trawl through 42 pages about a box set I probably won't buy, for several reasons, but it's interesting that several posters there agree with me, in thinking Tony either doesn't know (or doesn't care?) about the compression issues with the 2007 mixes. Shame really, the album uses dynamic range a lot more than many do, and to throw that away by having the quiet sections of Lamia or Silent Sorrow hitting you at the same volume as the loud bits of NYC is a waste. Particularly as one of the overriding strengths of digital/CD is the available dynamic range.

For those who must, this will be a purchase they make, despite the likelihood of some bits being disappointing. Reminds me of last years box set of To Our Children's..... by the Moody Blues. The remix is ok, but takes liberties, the 5.1 takes too many liberties (luckily, I have the original quad mix, which is perfect), but the box was worth it for the remix, and esp. the 5.1 mix, of the contemporary live show at the Royal Albert Hall, Dec 12 1969, long-available in original form as Caught Live + 5.

  • Now I’m curious to hear one of the better quality (sound and performance-wise) shows from the Lamb tour, which doesn’t have overdubs. Anyone know where I might find this?

  • Thank you for doing the interview for all of us fans to hear! It's a shame that for a 50th anniversary of The Lamb, they will just recompile the 2007 remix of the album and pair it with the 1998 mix of the live archive Lamb show. It leaves a lot to be desired for us die hard fans because we already have those releases. Why not use a different live show to mix it up and appeal to more than just new fans? Just like the BBC box set, this one is going to miss the mark for me unfortunately and I'm sure for plenty of others. ?(

The interview was made by Future Nostalgia.

  • I listened to the Shrine bootleg from Wolfgang's Vault and even though it's a complete show, there are some annoyances of vocals dropping off and even the intro's are on the quiet side which requires the volume to be turned up and then back down before the next song. I'll bet most recordings of the tour are like this and to support what Tony said in the interview, they needed cleaned up. I may have to revisit the Shrine show on the archive set again.

  • These other shows that often get cited, eg Liverpool being one. As superior in quality as they're said to be, presumably they simply don't pass muster, certainly for TB. I think I've heard the Liverpool Waiting Room and remember loving it as an incendiary performance, but don't think I've heard the whole show and what bits of various Lamb shows I've heard have never sounded great in terms of the vocals. Can anyone here who knows better confirm there are strong vocal performances that could reasonably have passed with approval from the Banks Quality Control Committee? Because if not, it's always going to have been pie in the sky.

Ditto the Grange tapes, as enticing as that is (for some of us, at least).

    Abandon all reason

  • If the box is only the 2007 remix of the album and the Archive I version of the Shrine show, then I will also pass. However, he does mention some other "bits and pieces" that will be part of the set. At very least, it sounds like the original live version of It has been found and restored, as well as the encore numbers. I'll have to see what other things are included.

There are some good quality bootlegs, but in the sense of good for 1974/5, not in the sense of being remotely close to commercial release duality (apart from Empire Pool, but that’s not a complete Lamb show). Band performances vary quite a bit, generally improving as the tour progressed. Peter’s microphone issues are frequently apparent.

  • Thank you to anyone and everyone involved in this interview- I thoroughly enjoyed it, the interviewer knew his stuff and approached it perfectly and Tony responded as I would have hoped and come to expect, candidly and with humility and humour.

I’m glad there is a box set that may allow younger fans to have what I have, although of course I always want more. Tony was a bit vague in detail about both The Lamb and the FGTR sets so I’ll have to see what’s worth buying, although I already know I’ll get both if I can.
