• I'm obviously in the minority here...but I actually really enjoy Oasis. They have weak albums and they have strong albums...but I've always enjoyed their unique take on the alternative rock sound. I especially enjoy Noel Gallagher's writing-which is where most of my enjoyment stems I suppose. I guess also there's some nostalgia for me too cos they were big right during my high school years, when my musical tastes started expanding beyond 80's music...

It's crystal clear how many here don't like them, but some of my favorites are:

    The Masterplan

    Don't Go Away

    Stop Crying Your Heart Out

    Let's All Make Believe

Do you Know What I Mean?

...and I guess most of the Morning Glory album.

  • OK, well I wasn't going to list any of my favourite Oasis songs, but as BN has just done so, my Top 10 would be:

    Don't Look Back In Anger

    Champagne Supernova

    Wonderwall

    Supersonic

    Cigarettes & Alcohol

    Acquiesce

    Stand By Me

    Half The World Away

    Stop Crying Your Heart Out

    Roll With It

  • Oh I liked them. King Of The Kerb and On Turn On are still really nice tunes. Can you remember the venue where they were supported by Oasis?

Now you are asking...start of so called britpop and alcohol fuelled...possibly the 100 club or a pub in Islington..forgot its name.

saw a lot of the Camden mov around this time...blur, elastica. Echobelly, Pele (remember them! ).oasis a few times...once when liam had a fight with someone in the crowd😄.good fun although was always likely to self combust, as it did!

Well they did play the 100 and - Powerhaus? I think the Islington one was called.

Pele! Bloody hell, forgot about them...

    Abandon all reason

  • A reunion no-one needs. Many years ago a friend took me to one of their concerts and to this day, this concert is at the bottom end of my concert experiences list. I have no idea why people think it's a great band. Not for me, sorry.

... any moment that we bring to life - ridiculous sublime

  • Noel today saying he wants to sell his catalogue for £200m.

So this is just Noel on his own.

Now, a proper band and singer (Genesis & Phil Collins) selling their work between them for £300m.

Noel is having a laugh, & if he got that, then Genesis & Phil should immediately be sent another £400m by concord.

  • Give it a rest you two, what are you, 14? I'm no Oasis/NG fan but it's about business, not who you think is best. And like them or not, Oasis are big business. Strictly speaking nobody "needs" any band's reunion but it's clearly one a lot of people WANT.

  • I simply gave my approval to comments from other users I totally agree with. I did not post any comment of my own so as not to add more fuel to the fire.

Regarding your comment, I think Def Leppard or Cathy Dennis (just a pair of names) are also big business, at least as the Gallaghers, but they don't get as much as media hype.

This is an extract from an interview by Joe Elliott, his comments depict it perfectly:

-I wanted [...] the biggest band in the world. And we were a couple of times. People don’t realise. We don’t get the credit we deserve from the media in Britain.

    -Is it frustrating?

-It’s nice to walk down Oxford Street without being recognised but then again when music magazines write about us they take the p*** because we’re not as cool as Johnny Marr, who isn’t as successful as us by a million miles. Jools Holland won’t have us on his show because we’re not cool enough.

-Is that because people look down on rock?

-Rock’s ploughed its own furrow for 30 years but still music magazines don’t give rock its due and still rave on about Nick Drake. How many more front covers do Paul McCartney and Morrissey need? Our album will sell more than Morrissey’s so why don’t we get the same kind of respect? There are more people than Bono and Michael Stipe to put on the cover of a magazine. Whether it’s Simon Le Bon, Gary Kemp, Bruce Dickinson or me, there are more musicians out there. It’s not just Lennon and Jim Morrison. Bands who have sold s***loads of records, whether it be us or Depeche Mode, are becoming footnotes.

Joe Elliot: Def Leppard don’t get enough respect

  • I don't know what point you are trying to make.

The reason the Gallaghers/Oasis are being 'hyped' at the moment is because they have reformed. If you don't like them, ignore them..

The stuff about who is 'cool' and who gets on magazine covers is a separate issue which may be worth discussing elsewhere. We even have it within the Genesis world, PG vs PC.

  • My answer to Backdrifter was that if it's a market question why other singers the with the same sales number or even higher are not given the same level of media attention?

The issue is that there are some singers and bands (among them the Gallaghers) who are always over-promoted and continuously mentioned regardless of musical talent or for being the best-selling ones, but because of croynism, as they are well-connected with the tastemakers.

This is the key point of Elliott's statement:

Our album will sell more than Morrissey’s so why don’t we get the same kind of respect? There are more people than Bono and Michael Stipe [...]. Whether it’s Simon Le Bon, Gary Kemp, Bruce Dickinson or me, there are more musicians out there.

What he was asking for was that, since his band sold more, they should at least be treated the same regard, not even better, to the favourites of the Privy Council of Coolness.

  • And I will repeat, not that it matters, that Oasis are being given a lot of attention at the moment because they have reformed.

You seem to have forgotten how critically reviled Oasis were by many people. They were maybe slightly cool at the time of Definitely Maybe, but then all the British press did was sneer at them.

Saying that just because somebody sold a lot of records they should be equally regarded does not always work. Taylor Swift is probably the biggest selling artist at the moment. Does that mean she should be treated as if she were as good as the Beatles? No, it does not.

  • It's mildly amusing seeing you espouse this naive oversimplistic sales/hype equation then get all frothed up about it when ultimately it's essentially a simple whiny case of "it's not FAIR!" It also shows a (possibly wilful) lack of understanding of the mechanics of how fame, sales success and media coverage intertwine. These aren't linear one-zero things, never have been, never will be. As for Elliot, if he can't enjoy his massive success - and well done to him and his bandmates on that - without indulging in pointless butt-hurt whinging about perceived lack of "respect", that's his problem.

    Abandon all reason

  • Like the politics thread, this is one I should avoid. But like a moth to the flame....

I absolutely can't stand Oasis. I tried so hard to like them when everybody else did and I bought Definitely Maybe too, but I couldn't get it over the line. Eyewateringly derivative music and hellishly ear-torturing production. They just took obvious influences from the past, added distortion, excessive compression and a Manc twang, then declared themselves a musical revolution. Odious individuals too, although Noel has softened half a notch in middle age.

I don't know whether to say credit to them for spotting an opportunity to replenish their coffers and some, or shame on the public for not growing cajones and saying no to being ripped off.

Some good banter on here though. Thank you Backdrifter for starting the thread and credit to IWishItWouldRainDown for mentioning Joe Elliott, who in turn mentioned Bruce Dickinson. UP THE IRONS! A truly outstanding British band (built from a love of Genesis too, surprisingly) and a band who commercialised their brand without taking the p1ss out of their fans.

I shall now run for cover!
