Notes: Dusk is known to many Genesis fans primarily as the namesake of the Italian fan club. The early number, written without Collins and Hackett, is considered a bit of a gem in the band's history. However, the album Trespass has many fans among Genesis fans. Reason enough to bring it back into focus using the example of Dusk....
  • Agreed.

I used to love this track as a moody teenager. Lights out, eyes closed, acoustic guitars and earnest vocals in the dark. Still fond of it now but I no longer hold it in such reverence. I still love the vibe of the whole album though.

    12

  • 13 from me. Lovely stuff. It’s simple but earnest and beautifully performed- from the guitars to the flute, the backing vocals to the superb lead vocal. Classic early Genesis.

  • I always liked this. Having not heard it for some time I just gave it a fresh listen and enjoyed it very much. Are the other voices just AP, or a combination of him + TB/MR?

    Abandon all reason

I’ve always thought it was the three of them, certainly I think Tony’s voice is in there but I’ll have to dig out some headphones and have listen.

  • I’ve read a few things on the web that suggests they all sing the chorus, including John Mayhew. They are all credited with voices so it could be the case- though equally that could refer to The Knife.

  • Always loved this one too.

A couple years ago, German prog magazine 'eclipsed' compiled two Genesis top ten song lists, one for the Gabriel era and one for the Collins era. In the Gabriel list they put Dusk along with much more obvious songs such as Watcher of the Skies, Supper's Ready, The Cinema Show etc.. Later on they published an interview with Tony Banks which included his reactions on their list. It said he was horrified when he saw Dusk - "one of our worst songs!". He also said he wouldn't have picked Dancing With The Moonlit Knight, and asked why they left out Firth of Fifth. Tony being Tony, I guess. I'll have to find the magazine in my stuff to look up the lists in case anyone is interested.

  • And on the demo version, according to Ant’s website, backing vocals included Tony Hill-Smith and Barry Johnston!

I wonder if they're among the ones are who more in tune or less so! The backing vocals sound so much better on the final version. I also wonder if John Mayhew appears on the demo in any capacity.
