FGTR vs CAS poll

  • Which album do you prefer? 29

    1. From Genesis To Revelation (7) 24%
    2. Calling All Stations (22) 76%

The two step-childs in the discography. Which one do you like better? The comparison between these two comes up regularly, even the band seems to count both out of their canon - Mike Rutherford speaks of Trespass as the "first" and WCD as the "last" Genesis album (various interviews, don't have the sources at hand). Let's see where the forum majority lies!

  • The litmus test for me is that I have listened to both albums many times and I cannot recall a single song off FGTR in my mind until I put the album on again. With CAS, I can at least recall some of the songs I like.

  • I think Calling All Stations is held back by some unforced errors, but still has some enjoyable moments. From Genesis To Revelation is a curiosity, but just doesn't have anything that pulls me in or keeps my attention.

  • Fortunately I’m happy being in a minority of one!

    I'm with you, Lawnmower.

    I absolutely love FGTR.

Is the music anything like what Genesis would become? No.

Is it highly polished and professional sounding? No

Does it sound amateurish in places? Yes

But, there are some great melodies in there, and the pure innocence and naivete just draw me in.

I'm really anticipating the new release that's supposed to be coming out relatively soon. I'm hoping it's without the strings and that the individual instruments are somehow separated in the mix.

  • FGTR for me. Although not their best, it shows, even at that early stage, they were able to write very strong melodies and I quite enjoy it. CAS, for me, sounds nothing like Genesis at times and the songs don't stick in the mind, where some of FGTR does. For what it's worth, I would also put it above WCD.

  • Didn't even need to think about it. I've always loved FGTR despite its obvious limitations - I find it charming and enjoyable and it even has a few songs I genuinely love on it. I can enjoy some of CAS sometimes, but I find it completely lacking in charm and a few songs are actually painful to sit through. So no contest.

  • Clearly CAS for me. There are some standout tracks, like the title track, "Dividing Line" or "One Man's Fool". I always thought this would be some sort of transition album, but the follow-up never came, which is a shame really ... and ignoring the album and trying to exclude this from the band's legacy is not a good idea neither.

  • I love both, each one for its own reasons. Even though my favorite era is from Trespass through Duke, as my avatar implies, I love all eras since for me it's also important that a band try new directions.

In the case of Genesis, even though I don't like the production on both of those albums, I still love the compositions.
