Genesis Singles Cup

  • Hello all, throwing this idea open for ideas / suggestions / critique as I was listening earlier to A Twilight Alehouse gave me the thought of how many singles the band had done, seeing as the aforementioned was one of a few flexi discs released.

I perused the UK and USA catalogues thus and the figure was 40+ and so for a cup format I would have to prune a few numbers from the following list:

So that is my proposal though as a newbie here, some kind soul may point out if this a) has been done before and b) which section of the board it would go in (or would Suppers Ready be it?)

I need to whittle the final list down to 32 and think that removing the American releases might be the way.

    Thanks in advance, Oliver.

  • Yeah to do this I agree either focus on one territory or include them all, globally (far east, mainland Europe, etc - might they have different releases?).

The UK list should also include Keep It Dark, Congo and If That's What You Need.

Much obliged. This is why on projects like these you have to get things absolutely spot on and I am all up for an education.

So please enlighten me on these three releases; Keep It Dark, Congo and If That's What You Need (which I love and would like to include).

I have worked only from the UK and USA catalogue so would like to know where they were released.

If we were to go globally inclusive of Europe it may be possible to have a starting point of 64 entries.

I would then use a randomiser to do the draw and the ties can then be ongoing with perhaps a rate of two per week?

The above helped me locate Keep It Dark (possible though that I missed it first time round) =O although it also lists Home By The Sea so I need to know if that ought to be included. I'm not finding If That's What You Need as a single release? ?(

Found Congo and so will add also Never A Time, Shipwrecked and Home By The Sea, I make the entries list currently at 46.

  • A quick check suggests I am mistaken certainly regarding UK releases, though in checking it looks like another UK one for the list is The Carpet Crawlers 1999.

So we include both Carpet Crawlers releases? Although at this stage in an attempt to reach 64 I'll take almost anything. ^^

    My cat is named Duchess.

  • They are different versions and distinct releases so yes they are both counted. I'm not sure about Home By The Sea but it was included on their videos dvd, the whole song both parts, a straight on-stage performance video as per the Mama Tour set-up.

    Abandon all reason

  • I may be able to construct a format where a few of the ties have three tracks so that the last sixteen ties are head to heads and so on.

I'm not sure there is anything left that has been left out but if something does arise, a song could easily be added to one of those few three-track ties.

  • Also, what about the Spot The Pigeon EP? I could include each song in the competition rather than just the option of being able to vote for the EP as a whole?

  • I now have a song for each playing card!. 8)

  • I admire your nerve but I don't think you can include all the tracks from the EPs! By that token you could include all the b-sides.

Fair point. So it will be the list as above but without each song from the EP's just Spot The Pigeon and 3 x 3 as sole contenders!

This way I still get Paperlate in twice. :S

I want this to be as concise as possible and to appeal to all once it gets going and it should be something of interest and generate a bit more forum activity!

Er... stand by for the cup draw....

although I think perhaps more exciting to just announce each tie rather than blurt the draw out in one go, huh?

    My cat is named Duchess.

  • I have compiled sixteen ties, each with three songs but one with four.

That extra song is Looking For Someone, perhaps I can discount it as a promo only 7"?

Should I just add each tie here in this section and how best can this get noticed to get the majority of people involved?

  • I won't be doing it anyway. For a supposed fans forum this place really sucks. Maybe you should rename it Beatles Love-In. If I could delate my account I would.

  • Oh now, come on. A few pro-Beatles comments in a thread on The Beatles doesnt make the entire forum "a Beatles love-in". People accept different opinions here but they were reacting to you expressing yours in a very sweeping, brusque and dismissive way.

Why not cool off a bit and come back, I'm sure other members will be interested in this thread and if you explained your belief the Beatles aren't an influence on anyone people would engage.

Well this took a turn for the bizarre.

I thought this was a pretty cool idea. However if you're surprised by a music forum - any music forum, though Genesis is probably among the better candidates - being populated by a substantial number of Beatles fans, I'm afraid you might just have to get used to it! Still, why not? People aren't going to disregard your posts just because you dislike the Beatles. (Though if you suggest that someone is "brainwashed" - whether or not you sincerely believe it to be true - I can imagine that's not going to win you any favours with them! ;))

Was it you or was it me? Or was it he, or she?
