Only just heard this. Different from Steve, Daryl, Mike has his own unique style:
Mike's Firth Of Fifth Solo
-
-
Just discovered the same solo a few days later in Dresden:
MIKE + THE MECHANICS live in Dresden: Mike Rutherford introduced & Firth Of Fifth excerpt
Really impressed that Mike attempted that - never thought I would see anyone except Steve and Daryl playing it from the Genesis camp.
-
Hmmm, well, maybe good on him for wanting to inject a snippet of classic Genesis into the show, but it's not very good and the clod-hopping half-tempo drumming doesn't help. The Purple Haze snippet is better.
-
We felt it was a bit strange (I took that video from Dresden) and it was also part of our interview. It seems like this is not the type of solo Mike should play, on the other hand it might be a bit tough to do that on the beat of Word Of Mouth ...
-
I do apologise - I've just realised Anto Drennan had a crack
at it to back in 1998 in Poland I think his solo
starts around 1:20 into this youtube clip:
Anto Drennan Plays Firth Of Fifth around 1:20
Can't believe I forgot that - surely that's everyone from Genesis that's attempted it live now?
-
Drennan played it on very show on the Calling All Stations tour. And he did it in a very smooth way.
He also did a small excerpt in previous Mechanics shows during Word Of Mouth
-
I must say. The solo excerpt made me laugh - it's obviously simply not for Mike. There was also a lot of discussion elsewhere. But in the end it's like halb a minute of a 2 hours gig - so is that really THAT important?
-
What on earth made Mike think that attempting that solo was a good idea?
To be honest, I think it's rather an embarrassing effort.
-
Much as I adore Mike's playing...I must concur with Rising Sun.
I really do not see the need for Mike to attempt this, and a poor attempt at that.
Best wishes
John
