listening to 'calling all stations', i have the intuition that tony and mike tried to reeinvent genesis and give it a "grunge" feel. and that's why the started from scratch, with new musicians for the album recording and the tour.

What you say is completely plausible, I think Mike's guitar sound is partially responsible for that, I remember that was the first thing the stuck out for me, in terms of sound. I sort of like the album but I'm under the impression Tony wasn't exactly in his best of forms on it. I like as usual his sound, chords progression, the melodies he builds upon them and there are some good moments but he is not as strong as on other albums. We don't get to blame Ray either, the song were mostly written when he came in, vocal lines included.

They really, really should have released their unplugged record when it was fashionable. I would have loved too to listen what they would have done with the songs but I admit for me it would also depend on which songs.

This probably says a lot about me but I genuinely can't work out whether or not that entire post is some sort of elaborate satire.

    :/

I suspect who started the thread was being serious, I was just taking the piss out Peter and the stunt he pulled last time with the meeting in Scotland.

The silliness of my post is directly proportional to the unlikelihood of any reunion happening imo.

Really - the others are expressing interest? I hadn't heard that.

Peter has, so he proposed a meeting in Kuala Lumpur to decide whether they are going to do it or not. He said he's be up to it but only after the release of his next studio album and subsequent tour. He dangled the idea of playing the entire Lamb album but no instruments, only percussions and vocals. Tony was understandably thrilled.

That's sadly true. But they played most of their hits and important songs in 2007 and they don't have to do the exact same thing again. That means they could do a completely different project: play an unplugged show with selected songs, or (my dream) record an album with newly written songs

Phil struggled considerably with several songs whose keys were lowered a bit too much for my taste back in 2007 and as we all know his voice hasn't gotten any better. I love the fact that he was out there touring, he went through some really rough times with the divorce, drinking and health issues and I am happy he is doing something he loves and with his son beside him on top. I not only have an immense respect for Phil the musician, I am thankful for all he has given me for so many years, I also love the guy. I think he is a fairly decent bloke and he carried himself very well, that said and considering that I don't care for over 60-70% of his solo output, his voice is gone. A sad fact but a fact nonetheless. I think it would be great if HE would release a solo album and this is totally selfless of me, as I wouldn't probably be interested but a Genesis album? I don't know, I really don't like his voice anymore, power issues aside, that nasal tone he developed grates me a bit. I really prefer to wallow in nostalgia and remembering for the singer he was.

    Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

I'd rather stick to my memories of a great, powerful and healthy band than having to witness the downfall of aging rockers (and in one case an handicapped musician) trying to take back the stage with a young teenager, as talented and skilled he may be. Very, very bad idea.

Handicapped musicians comment aside, I'm with you. As George said: All things must pass and I for one never enjoyed this kind of things, perhaps with the only exception of Bonham playing with Led Zeppelin. I hope Nicholas has a brilliant career, he seems to deserve it and I think it would be extremely important for him to do something unrelated to his father but as far as I am concerned I have no appetite for this and I truly miss the point.

This is the first is a series of videos of other artists talking about The Beatles and their influence. Note how diverse the people are: Lemme, Roger Waters, Pete Townshend, Billy Joel, Freddie Mercury, Bob Marley, David Bowie, Sting, etc. In subsequent videos there are Anthrax, Linkin Park, Phil Collins (video 5), Dave Grohl, Henry Rollins...

You sounded like you didn't believe that Tears for Fears were influenced by The Beatles. Listen to Sowing the Seeds of Love and compare with I Am the Walrus. When they performed this song live, they often added a snippet of All You Need Is Love at the end.

I guess it would be quicker and shorter to find some artists who haven't been influenced by them or doesn't care for them, like Keith Richards, although Keith has seldom anything nice to say about other artists: The Who and Zeppelin for instance and even so, as long as the Beatles have been around or at least up to 68, the Rolling Stones had always been looking what the Beatles were doing, it was hardly the case the other way around.

For some time there was a very prevalent "John was the cool one and the real genius" but I think that's been substantially re-appraised over the years

What bands have been influenced by The Beatles 'cos I can't think of any. Over-hyped, yes they fit the tag, as well as 'kajillions' liking them there are plenty of us that just don't get it - much ado about nothing springs to mind.

I don't know if you are being serious or not but I suggest a survey of interviews on YouTube: Yes, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, either covered a Beatles song on their debut albums or quoted them as a direct influence. Dylan dropped Folk in favor of Rock after listening to the Beatles. Countless musicians, among others Phil, to this day a Beatle fan and Tony stated the Beatles changed their lives forever and actually led them to embrace music. Don't find it weird that you are here for you love of Genesis and you find yourself defending your dislike for the Beatles. Genesis love the Beatles, always have. Unsuspected fans like The Dream Theater or Steve Lukather pop up all the time declaring their love for the band but ultimately the list is simply too long, one has been provided and confronted with facts you decided to ignore them and be rude about it. In recap: it's OK not to like them, I truly don't care but it seems to me, when you make statements or rhetorical questions like that, you really don't know not what you are talking about and you don't seem interested in knowing either.

I think they marked themselves out early on as a band for whom the guitar was important for texture and atmosphere, especially with Hackett's arrival. One of the many things I love so much about them is the absence of look-at-me widdly guitar solos; they said, listen - there are other things this instrument can do (the main reason Stuermer's squiggly takes on Salmacis and especially Firth leave me cold).

I think the whole idea of texture and sonic tapestry provided by the interplay of the acoustic guitars was laid down already by Ant and Mike and it was really one of the best features of Genesis, already on Trespass. It was then enhanced by Steve, being basically a better guitarist than the two but sharing a love for open tunings, weird chords and those kind of atmospheres. I agree also that all them were basically focused on the music and not showcasing their skills. Peter said that what attracted them about Steve's playing was the fact that he was very removed from the crotch-flashing guitar hero and very much about texture in the music which is what they needed at the time. People say he was a minimalist but I don't really think it's the case, he was almost driven to be that, given the overwhelming keyboards sound and while it is a bit sad, it gave him time to develop and also avoided a Howe-Wakeman situation with two very flamboyant players on occasion playing at each other. Finally and agreeing with all the above, it is also the reason why Daryl's playing, as technically marvelous as it is, sounds out of place to me when he revisits Steve's solos. It's flashy and as such in contradiction with the original spirit of the music.
