Hearing the usual stuff at this time of year about "getting through January" I reckon a lot of people find January 'depressing' because so many people around them, and the media, keep telling them they're supposed to.

I get that christmas/new year is a nice break and enjoyable time for many who like to/are able to take time off, relax, see family (yes I know those last two can cancel each other out) so it feels a bit of a let-down to drag yourself back into work when the relaxation and celebrations are over, it's cold and dark - and I realise this is my Northern Hemisphere perspective. Don't know about other countries but also, here in the UK concepts such as 'dry January' and 'veganuary' are attached to this month and probably feel to many like an enjoyment vacuum.

I love christmas but also generally like autumn and winter and don't mind cold dark days. Of course not everyone feels that way but I'm sure the constant drip-drip of "January's SO depressing" plays a large part.

Nice and hot down here, air conditioning kicking in at 8 in the morning...

I'd like that too. He was so good at it, and I liked best of all when he went off piste a little with stuff like Private Investigations, Telegraph Road or Your Latest Trick. I'm not familiar enough with his solo output to know if has any slightly odder stuff like that out there.

It depends what you mean by 'slightly odder'. Some of the 'character' songs like Imelda (about Imelda Marcos), Rudiger (about an obsessive German fan) or Coyote (about the Road Runner's nemesis in the Warner Brothers cartoons) or Boom, Like That about Ray Kroc (MacDonalds boss) might fit that description, I don't know. Musically though, I suppose the closest he has come to Telegraph Road is Speedway At Nazareth, which is a real epic, but give me Silvertown Blues any day (also something of an epic).

oh - didn't mean to be offensive! It's perfectly fine you like his output!

I just lost interest after his later albums all sounded more and more the same. I quite like "Golden Heart" and "Sailing..." but after that it became less interesting, especially his last few albums like "Privateering". And the new song sounds pretty boring to me. Would love to hear a proper rock album again.

Not offensive at all! I see what you mean! But as for a 'rock' album, he's a singer-songwriter now, really, and even if he wanted to I don't think he could write a song like Money For Nothing or Solid Rock these days.

    The deluxe boxset?

His solo albums are some sort of lucky bag. Sometimes good, sometimes not even average. The first track sounds promising, though!

As a devoted fan who loves all the solo albums without exception I would be interested to know which ones you consider 'not even average'. For me he's been amazingly consistent. I can count the solo songs I dislike on one hand.

Same here. Saw him once and it was a great show. I like Piano man, Leningrad and River of dreams, Burt then there are classics like My life, The ballad of Billy the Kid, Scenes from an Italian restaurant etc. I am sure there is a lot to discover beyond Greatest Hits. Any suggestions?

I mentioned Storm Front & The Nylon Curtain & I would add Glass Houses & 52nd Street. The Bridge is good too, though the crtics didn't like it.

I'd like to see him return to making music. I am a big fan and have seen him several times, including once with Elton John. My favourite albums by him are Storm Front and The Nylon Curtain but there are a couple which I am indifferent to the point of disliking - An Innocent Man and River Of Dreams.

I have never been to the Southern Hemisphere.

I hope it will be otherwise soon.

I am eager for Australia, all my life I have wanted to go there.

Without deraliing this thread can you tell me why (to coin a phrase) briefly?

I've never been to Russia, the country I most want to visit, and in its current state don't think I ever will.
