    I certainly wouldn't pay to see a Steve Hackett concert where he plays a bunch of his more recent stuff. I think he's realistic enough to know what his fans want to hear live. I saw him about a month ago, and it was incredible.

    Yes, he knows what his fans want. Perhaps then he shouldn't tout each new album with the lavish purple prose he does. If he really did think his more recent music was as great as he claims, he'd want to play it live.

    I also think they led with their best on pretty much every album.


    I also agree that Invisible Touch is probably the one that wasn't perfect, and I would have led with Tonight, Tonight, Tonight. I think it would have set a totally different mood for the whole album that might have helped improve the initial impression a little bit.

    I think TTT is a bit too long and downbeat for an opening song, although Mama.... I think they were right to change the tone to something instantly accessible.

    I just watched the video which at least gave me a few unintended laughs. The crying baby at about 00.30 in is hilarious. The lumpen literal-mindedness of the imagery - the song mentions 'bombs fall in the night' and we see a street of wrecked houses and it's quite dark. 'Fairground' is mentioned - now here comes a twirling carousel. 'The bell tolls' - DANG! - oh look there's Big Ben!


    As for the song itself, it's shite.

    The fairground stuff, abut five seconds of it in colour when the rest of the video is monochrome, was totally jarring. I always like songs about London but this just didn't work. Once again he's released a video which has had no thought put into it. As for the song it may grow on me at some point.


    I have pre-ordered because I want an autographed copy as with the previous four albums. I remember when I first joined this board how excited I was that I could have autographed albums by a member of Genesis. I have a feeling this could be the last.


    And yet you have to applaud him for still making music, even though he is so reluctant to play any of it live.

    I find AFTP oddly striking and I like that it has to be looked up and its significance understood beyond those who'd be in the know. It's kind of the album cover take on the 'found object' concept - in this case a thing that's part of the band's home environment, and with its graphical starkness and associated slogan it lends both a cover image and title.


    Those Dylan covers are appalling.

    Well, if you consider the recording studio in Miami their home environment, given that they came from Athens, Georgia. Apparently Michael Stipe took the photo. I still don't like it.

    I see no reason for us to doubt Steve or consider him a boob or liar for the sons of the Beatles comment. He does mention it quite a lot, but personally I find Lennon to be a musician that holds little value to me for the way he conducted his life and relationships. I preferred George and Paul to John and didn’t care for the politics. I don’t need a Lennon endorsement to make me love Genesis. I adore them more than any prog band, even a few centimeters more than Yes….and that’s saying a lot because I’m a lifelong Yes maniac…

    It's very unfashionable to even suggest that to quote Elton John's Empty Garden, 'some say he farmed his best in younger years'. It was not his fault that his life ended just when he might have returned to music - who knows what he may have done? But all the simplistic politics, and the influence of Yoko, leaves not a great deal of solo work that really stands up, and I included the hallowed Imagine in that.

    If you go back you can see that I said I thought REM & Fleetwood Mac albums covers are bad, as I did in the Genesis solo albums thread. I have never liked the covers of Fleetwood Mac & Rumours - I find them pretentiouus & off-putting, and yet they are better than Tusk, which is awful. As for REM, the cover of Automatic For The People is dreadful, but so is Out Of Time (which I will always consider a better album).


    Most of Paul McCartney's & Elton John's covers are good. The cover of Band On The Run & Goodbye Yellow Brick Road are etched in my brain.


    Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys - overrated album & horrible cover.

    Bob Dylan - most of them are dreadful, except for Highway 61 Revisited & Desire.


    I would imagine that if I mention Love Beach by ELP you will all know what I am talking about. Apparently it's also a bad album.


    Frank Zappa did some good covers - Broadway The Hard Way where he's just smiling, unexpected.


    Those are just a few examples of both good & bad.

    Face Value is one of the most iconic covers of all time. All the others except Dance Into The Light are memorable (and then he recreated them years later). For Peter my favourites are 1, 3 & So. I like Steve's At The Edge Of Light but it's time he did something about the font he uses on his album covers.

    About The Least You Can Do...


    It has more weary resignation than some of the more recent anguished 'why did you leave me' songs he did and for that reason it works better than some of those songs. I like how after he's used American pronunciation he suddenly switches to 'is that so much to ask' sung the English way. Strangely this line is not printed in the lyric sheet.

    As I only have Discography (best of) and Very I suppose I'm a 'casual' fan but some of their hits are a couple of my favourite songs of all time, specifically Opportunities (Let's Make Lots Of Money), Being Boring, Suburbia, Rent, and if I keep going I will list them all. West End Girls always makes me think of London and is a nice companion to my beloved Straits' Wild West End. Also Neil Tennant is a Geordie like hubby.

    The album itself (I have it already) is better than his previous ones, imo. It also helps that it is only 45 minutes long. It serves the songs and some interludes are just wonderful short instrumentals.
    so, different approach here.
    The final track is an acoustic instrumental from 2018, first released on the Wuthering Nights live album as a bonus track on the Japanese edition.

    Well I don't know, Steve. I've been around for long enough now to know that these new albums are released and then vanish into the ether. If the songs are relatively short, who knows. Perhaps he might play a couple more of them for at least one tour.

    It was co-written by Rutherford and Robertson, although Rutherford - whose father had died a few months earlier - had nothing to do with the lyrics. And he was initially unsure whether the subject matter was too heavy for a pop song. It is also understandable if some people find the song too shallow.

    I had no idea Mike didn't write the lyrics of the title track. I just always assumed he did, as his father had died not long before. As for it being 'shallow' I guess it's 'shallow' in the way Another Day In Paradise is 'shallow'. What does that even mean?
