With 2018 marking the 50th anniversary of the recording of Genesis' first album what better way to celebrate it than with this limited edition hardback photographic book incorporating the Genesis family of bands from the seventies to the present day. As well as images of Genesis from the days with Peter Gabriel through to the 2007 reunion, this book includes photos from the solo careers of Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Steve Hackett and Mike & The Mechanics.

Beautifully designed and packaged in a block foiled, presentation case with a set of 7 high quality prints — two group shots and one each of Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Peter Gabriel, Steve Hackett and Phil Collins.

I believe the book is all about the concert photography of the band by Mr Alan Perry -

Many people had a list or two, some public some not so public. Trading was fun in the early 2000's with boards being released also but the well seems to have run dry or people are hiding their trades of such material.

I am often astonished to learn that just as I think everything that's out there is out there, something else comes along.

So with trading, never give up.

    Enjoy

Ah yes Hugh Fielder, starred on The Three Sides Live concert video in some of the interview segments... on the tour bus he can be spotted wearing a Police tour jacket. One can only offer conjecture how that went down on the bus.

Hugh Fielder - wrote reviews and did interviews for the music paper - Sounds.

The book has be printed with different covers, on another note:

Bowler and Dray, where consultants on the Genesis documentary - Genesis A History, which was mainly filmed by BBC Scotland.

(my first actual Genesis book), The book was revised in the early 1990's and there was even a German language version with a better cover design on it.

    As for Phil Collins...

Johnny Waller, he did on one occasion in 1982 (just in time for Hello I Must Be Going) interview Phil, the interview was published in Sounds.

Ray Coleman, notable journalist and editor of Melody Maker... his series of books were highly recommended, sadly with his passing in 1995/6 his wife took over the Phil Collins book and it was finally released. Sadly it contained an unhealthy amount of pages and material connected to that "affair" in 1992 and the breakdown of his marriage to Jill Tavelman.

Note: Phil Collins actually signed my copy back in 1998. "To Mark, Don't believe all you read. Phil Collins"

There are plenty more books to discover,

StillCan'tDance well you could do that or you could just laugh your arse off, chalk it up to experience.

Running The Archive is like a Indiana Jones film somedays, you get close to stuff to find people rightly so have dumped history or some other element are chasing you on an Airship or meddling with old artefacts in Egypt. Rightly so like Indiana Jones, I dislike Snakes.

    Ha ha ha ha

@ jwckauman, the Genesis remix project saw the whole catalogue released as FIVE Boxsets totalling close to £500, so forgive me for thinking they would repeat that exercise as one huge boxset with the surround mixes in there. The Record company trialled Blu Ray Audio with Selling England, in my opinion too soon after the Boxsets and with no additional material, certainly with no promotion by the band. After disappointing sales the Blu Ray Audio project was aborted, that said it took the mixes that Genesis have in storage now from 2006 through to 2010. So sonically there was nothing to gain.

All vinyl remasters since 2006, come from stereo mix downs from this era as well.

    Hope that helps,

@ Ian, perhaps there is a grain of truth but what's lousy about the Stereo mixes?

    Is it the source material?

Is it the work of Nick Davis & his assistants?

Is it the work of the Mastering engineer / mastering process?

Is it an issue with the format?

Is it an issue with the quality of the playback equipment, CD players range from £25 to £2,500 is there much discernible difference?

Anyone can describe things as lousy, but whats the real issue here?

The Steve Hoffman forums at the time were full of people running a variety of tests (non of which most of them seemed qualified to understand). Worse than that the Steve Hoffman forums started to sound a tad conspiracy theory, as though they were angry / jealous that they didn't get asked to do the project. Now the fantasists there seem to think Steven Wilson is the Mr Fix It of Prog legacy.

Me personally? I wouldn't have spent close to £500 on a series of Boxsets for the stereo mixes, if I already had the remasters series from 1994 on the shelves already. For that price tag it was always about the surround mixes and the format (SACD) and (DVD-A). That swung the decision for me.

Multitrack tapes, so 24 or 32 or 48 channels of music.

Each channel you can turn up or down the volume.

So suddenly, you can change the way a song sounds by turning up that guitar, turning down those keyboards etc.

Although, the 2006 onwards was the only time Genesis went back to the original multi tracks. Before that and everything was done from Stereo Copy masters, Vinyl / Cassette / CD.

There are always rumours, there was a recent documentary about Mclaren on Amazon Prime (UK) which followed the 2017 season I believe. It was quite interesting and brutally frank / honest.

It was very interesting to see how the management will do anything to appease Alonso.

So he might not be bowing out just now.

    @ One For The Vine,

Really you should give Armando Gallo's books or Apple App - I Know What I Like (paid for full version) a read or go first, Chapter & Verse is alright but it loses focus after the Lamb period.

    Mike's autobiography is candid

Phil's autobiography is candid also but in a different way

Steve Hackett is working on a book but non of us know much more than that.

There are other books to be reading and looking at, some of which are displayed here (not the full book text)

    http://thegenesisarchive.co.uk/category/books/

just to give you an idea.

Alan Hewitt's Genesis Revisited, an interesting place to start but the Armando Gallo books are the best place to start.

    Kind regards

Ian and others, when you discussing the 2006 and onwards releases verses the 1994/5 and previous versions of the Genesis catalogue. Are you talking about the Stereo only versions?

Nick Davis's word to me was that the Stereo mixes in the 2006 and onwards, where the fold down mixes from the Surround Sound mixes.

The whole Genesis catalogue in the surround format is by example a huge achievement for the fans, but also perhaps one of the first band's to release their entire works in such a format / programme.

The Stereo mixes are never going to be the best representation of the material Genesis have written / recorded, I find such conversations redundant especially when they start going on about compression / mastering etc.

The box set / remixing project was never about the Stereo mixes or the concert / tv era footage of the time, it was always about the Surround mixes and getting them completed and released. The Stereo mixes were contractual through the Record Company.

The previous stereo releases, all have come from reel to reel tape of the copy masters... not the multi track tapes.

    Christian,

I pretty much agree with your review. Although like you I think they rushed it after 1976... it should have come out in two parts, I would have paid for both. I am not 100% certain I like the Author's angle. But supposedly most of text within it was made up of transcripts, from interviews the author had conducted.

Did you know there was a paperback version? I have a copy of it here at home.

Meanwhile there is a description of the book on The Genesis Archive

    http://thegenesisarchive.co.uk…ial-biography-by-genesis/

At least it got released, that's the key thing...
