I wonder if it was a rule that no longer applies. I had not heard of it from anywhere other than the Genesis world but it has always been an interesting curiosity for me.

So looking like the boys are still up fot it!...🤞
Interesting! Looking at the small drumkit and wondering if this would be a part of an acoustic section of the show? And really wondering about the kit behind Phil... Looks like it is set up for a lefty with the (presumably) ride cymbal to the left. Looks a little like a smaller Phil setup. Of course no way of knowing with so little to go on but I can only hope he plays something at these shows!

I was not yet born when this one came out. My picks were Looking for Someone, Stagnation, and The Knife.
Stagnation is my favorite of the bunch. It was a good indication of things to come. You had the first extended keyboard solo showing Tony preferred substance to speed, the loud bits, the quiet bits, different musical themes - it was Genesis finally arrived! It even has my favorite John Mayhew drumming moment. Nearer to the end during the "I want to sit down" section he does two minimal drum fills which come off just behind the beat. It's perfect and actually sounds Collins-esque to me.

I like RAAB from a technical standpoint. Lots of fun keyboard bits and the middle section is great fun in 13/8. This song live with Bill Bruford is always a pleasure to listen to, as is the original.
That said, I like both Duchess and FL more. I can say I get more of a "feeling" from them. The instrumental sections of each are so different but I feel an emotional connection to them. The lyrics mean more to me certainly, especially on FL.
But it's hard to compare such completely different songs. If we are talking purely classic prog sounds here then I get RAAB being higher than these two. It has the big instrumentals, synth solo, mellotron, interesting time signatures, and it tells a story. These aren't all things necessary for a good song but they help in a classic prog poll I would imagine.

And his decision might be to side with his mum and abandon the tour. It might not be, but we don't know the family dynamics.
Honestly I'd be surprised if he gave up the once in a lifetime opportunity to play on a Genesis tour whatever the situation. Guess we will find out at some point soon depending on when/if the shows happen.

Now that makes me wonder which songs I would have liked to hear augmented with real strings or brass. Watcher of the Skies comes to mind, the intro played with real strings. Or Behind The Lines with real brass.
Agreed! There are so many possibilities with Genesis music, especially the early stuff. My mind goes straight to something like Entangled with the end being supplemented with a string section, or Blood On the Rooftops, but Watcher would be incredible!

This is from the old Collins question & answer forum thread.
For your information: We will, at some point, put together the complete q&a stuff in an article. It's just an awful lot of text and info.
AUSTRALIAN MUSICIAN UNION RULES....insist on the touring band employing at least the same number of local musicians as there are in the touring unit. So with my tour and Genesis tours we decided to use real string players instead of a support act. These guys and ladies became friends, as we usually used the same people whenever possible. Sue Chaplin, a violinist, we see whenever we play in NYC as she lives there now. On the Genesis compilation there is a live version of "Your Own Special Way" that I believe was from such a tour.
Ah thank you! That clears that up for me 🙂
I wonder if that rule is still in effect. Based on what Feel It Coming shared above it seems not. Interesting that they chose to go with musicians sharing the stage rather than an opening act. I suppose if the rules are still in effect that most bands might go that route, though it may cut into their playing time depending on curfews and such.

I just pre-ordered the Fleet Foxes new album Shore and listened to it online last night. Wow what a great album! I'll be getting the physical copy in February but definitely will be listening to it digitally until then.
